David Williams: Every match is difficult in Hero ISL

The first match of the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2019-20 campaign will see two-time champions, ATK clash with Kerala Blasters at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Sunday. The former champions had a disappointing time last season, averaging just a single goal per game and thereby, failing to make it into the semi-finals.

With that in mind, the club has brought in some top attackers, including the likes of Roy Krishna and David Williams. The latter, in an exclusive interview with indiansuperleague.com, shared his thoughts on the move, whilst also going at length about his experiences in India so far. Here are the excerpts:

On the opening match of Hero ISL 2019-20.

It is going to be a difficult match, but I think every game in this League (Hero ISL) is going to be difficult and we can only focus on ourselves and our tactics. We need to be confident enough in ourselves. If we give the best performance possible, then we can take the three points.

On ATK scoring a lot of goals during pre-season matches.

It does not matter which teams you play in terms of scoring goals and being confident. It is all about hitting the back of the net and having confidence in yourself. You take confidence also from becoming fitter as well and knowing that you can last longer on the pitch. I think we are very confident (coming) into the 2019-20 Hero ISL season. We have a lot of other players scoring as well, so I think, it will be an entertaining season for ATK.

Developing chemistry with Roy Krishna.

We know each other, we know our relationships on and off the field. We know how we work, we know we both have pace, an eye for the goal and we both want to score. I hope that we can give to the fans and to the Hero ISL, our experience and put on a show for everyone.

Experience of the India vs Bangladesh match at ATK’s home ground.

Yes, it was a good experience. There were a lot of people so the atmosphere was good. I like to see the stadium full. If they are in Kolkata and like football, I think they should come to our (ATK’s) matches. This international match (India vs Bangladesh) was good watch. I hoped for a better result for India, but football is a funny game sometimes. I think the 1-1 draw might have been deserved.
