Bemammer, Albiach, Thoi discuss NorthEast United FC's Durand Cup success
NorthEast United ended their trophy drought with a thrilling Durand Cup win over defending champions Mohun Bagan SG.
NorthEast United FC’s Durand Cup victory heralds a new chapter for the club as they look to build on this success when they begin their Indian Super League (ISL) campaign on September 16. After hitting rock bottom in the ISL two seasons ago, the management didn’t waver but instead made strategic decisions to rebuild the team.
The appointment of Juan Pedro Benali, followed by the decision to extend his contract, proved pivotal. The Spaniard led his side with determination, and his players capitalized on every opportunity, delivering when it mattered most.

Following a semi-final appearance in last year’s Durand Cup, the Highlanders returned to the tournament with even greater hunger and determination this season. They showcased their dominance throughout the competition, and despite being two goals down against the formidable Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the final, they maintained their composure to mount an extraordinary comeback in the second half and secure their first piece of silverware.
"We knew the game was going to be tough for us, but in the second half, we believed in each other and had trust. We believed in ourselves," Nestor Albiach said in an interview with indiansuperleague.com after the game.
Albiach, who has been with the club since last season, spoke highly of the head coach, praising him as a tactician who understands the players in detail and is the right man to lead the side.
"For me, he is one of the best coaches. He knows everything, and I believe in him," he remarked.
The attacking midfielder further expressed his hopes of continued success in the coming days, emphasizing that this trophy will significantly boost their confidence moving forward.
"We are very happy. We made history, and I believe the best is yet to come. We are on the right path," Albiach commented.
Moroccan midfielder Mohammed Ali Bemammer has been a cornerstone for the Highlanders since last season, playing a vital role in their Durand Cup triumph. Renowned for his ability to shield the defence while contributing to the attack, Bemammer’s impact was felt throughout the tournament.
Unfortunately, an injury cut his time in the final short, but he remained on the sidelines, passionately supporting his teammates as they orchestrated a remarkable comeback.
"I'm very happy with the trophy. It was a difficult match for us, and I want to thank all the players for their fighting spirit. Everyone was focused on getting the result, and we must continue like this," Bemammer said.
The Spanish coach has also placed trust in young Indian players, signing several promising prospects for the team. Among them is winger Thoi Singh. The 20-year-old featured in all matches except the game against BSF, and whenever given the opportunity, he made the most of the chances provided by his coach.

Singh finished the campaign with two goals and an assist, one of which came in the semi-final against Shillong Lajong.
"Of course, that goal against Shillong Lajong boosted my confidence, and that’s why the coach kept me in the starting XI against Mohun Bagan Super Giant. The coach believed in me, and I wanted to seize the opportunity," Singh explained.
"It’s the first trophy in the club’s history, so we’re feeling great, and I’m very happy for all the travelling fans. We need to achieve even more in the future," he added.
Now bolstered by the Durand Cup victory, the winger is eager to perform well in the league and continue with the same winning mentality.
"We have now become Durand Cup champions, so we want to head into the ISL with a champion’s mentality," Singh concluded.
