Baljit Sahni (R) was unlucky not to score last night. The Hero Indian Super League (ISL) which kicked off on Sunday is a tournament meant to showcase Indian footballing talents.Atlético de Kolkata’s Baljit Sahni had a chance to create history by becoming the first goal scorer in the ISL on the opening day. Skipper Luis Garcia sent him through along the right flank early on in the inaugural match at the Salt Lake Stadium, but the sturdy Punjabi striker was denied by Mumbai City FC goalkeeper Subrata Paul in a one-to-one situation.Ethiopian striker Fikru Teferra then stole his thunder by opening the account in the 27th minute, grabbing all the accolades in the bargain. Sahni could have got onto the score sheet later on in the evening but Paul again rose to the occasion by parrying his powerful header following a pin point cross from Garcia. The red & white striped shirts went on to win the match by a 3-0 margin with Borja Fernandez and substitute Arnal Llibert also chipping in with goals. In the second ISL match played in Guwahati, Spanish playmaker Koke’s solitary strike helped NorthEast United FC down Kerala Blasters FC 1-0. This means that the four goals in the first two games have been scored by foreigners and the ISL is still waiting for an Indian goal scorer to get into the record books. Local lad Durga Boro came close to finding the target from a screaming long ranger only to bring the best out of former England goalkeeper David James under the Kerala bar. Today, Delhi Dynamos FC take on FC Pune City in the national capital. Will an Indian be able to break the deadlock and get onto the score sheet? Or will we have to wait till FC Goa lock horns with Chenniayin FC tomorrow? Take a guess and let us know which Indian will make history…
