The Hero Indian Super League 2022-23 is inching towards its grand finale as Bengaluru FC take on ATK Mohun Bagan in the final in Goa on Saturday.

Bengaluru FC overcame a stern challenge at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium against Mumbai City FC in the first semi-final of the Hero ISL 2022-23 season. When there was noting to separate both the in-form sides after an aggregate score of 2-2 at the end of 120 minutes in the second leg, the Blues came out on top in the penalty shootout with a score of 9-8 edging past the Islanders to book a place in the Hero ISL final.

ATK Mohun Bagan and Hyderabad FC played their parts in a 0-0 drubbing in the second leg of the semi-final 2 of the Hero ISL 2022-23 and again, 120 minutes were not enough to separate the sides, who boasted a brilliant defensive record throughout the season. The Mariners came out on top at the Vivekanand Yuba Bharati Krirangan in the penalty shootout with a 4-3 scoreline against Hyderabad FC to book a final encounter against Bengaluru FC in Goa.

Both semi-finals of the Hero ISL 2022-23 went all the way to the penalty shootouts which was a first in the league's history.

As the dust settles on the two thrilling encounters, let's look back at every penalty shootout in Hero ISL history.

Hero ISL 2014 - FC Goa 0(2)-(4)0 Atletico de Kolkata

It was the first season of the Hero ISL, and in its first semi-final, FC Goa came up against ATK FC at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa, which ended 0-0 after two legs of action. The game was decided by penalties, and the Kolkata based side were victorious with a 2-4 shootout victory to reach the final, where they eventually defeated Kerala Blasters FC.

Hero ISL 2016 - Delhi Dynamos FC 2(0) - (3)2 Kerala Blasters FC

Delhi Dynamos FC and Kerala Blasters FC locked horns against each other in the semi-final of the Hero ISL 2016 season, which saw goals in both legs. The Blasters won the first leg at home 1-0 while Delhi Dynamos FC emerged victorious in a 2-1 victory in the second leg which saw the game go into extra-time and into a penalty shootout, where Kerala Blasters FC were dominant in a 0-3 shootout victory, while Delhi Dynamos FC did not score a single penalty, which brought an end to their campaign.

Hero ISL 2016 - Kerala Blasters FC 1(3) - (4)1 Atletico de Kolkata

The Blasters faced ATK FC in the Hero ISL 2016 final in Kochi in front of their home fans which was the repeat of the 2014 Hero ISL final. The Yellow Army sought revenge against ATK FC but after an equally contested battle, nothing separated both sides after 120 minutes with a score of 1-1 in the big event, the visitors bagged their second Hero ISL title with a penalty shootout win where Debjit Majumder made a crucial save and was instrumental in a 4-3 victory to the Kolkata based side.

Hero ISL 2020-21 - Mumbai City FC 2(6) - (5)2 FC Goa

Having won the League Shield, Mumbai City FC were up against FC Goa in the semi-final of the Hero ISL 2020-21. The first leg at Fatorda Stadium saw each side score two goals, while the second leg was a 0-0 game after 120 minutes, which took the game into a penalty shootout. The Islanders came out 6-5 winners in the shootout, which went into sudden death, and Bartholomew Ogbeche was the hero for the Mumbai side, who scored the winning penalty to take his side into the final for the first time in the club’s history. Mumbai City FC, having made it into the final, defeated ATK Mohun Bagan 2-1 in Goa to lift the Hero ISL trophy.

Hero ISL 2021-22 - Hyderabad FC 1(3) - 1(1) Kerala Blasters FC

After a stellar 2021-22 season, Hyderabad FC made it to the final and played Kerala Blasters FC. After a 1-1 scoreline at the end of 120 minutes, the Blasters never seemed like a dominant force, and showcased a poor show in the shootout where they scored only one from four attempts resulting in Hyderabad FC clinching their maiden Hero ISL title. Another shootout heartbreak for the Blasters.

Hero ISL 2022-23 - Bengaluru FC 2(9) - 2(8) Mumbai City FC

After a slow start to the season, Bengaluru FC gained momentum since the turn of the year, which saw them finish strong and book a place in the knockout round, setting up a semi-final clash against one of the best sides in the history of the Hero ISL, Mumbai City FC. The Blues made sure they did not lose their footing and kept the momentum going, while Mumbai City FC were like a shadow of themselves in the knockout rounds.

The first semi-final of the Hero ISL 2022-23 season went all the way to penalties after a 2-2 scoreline on aggregate at the end of the two legs. In sudden death, the Blues came on top with a 9-8 penalty shootout victory over the Islanders to book a place in the final at Goa.

Hero ISL 2022-23 - ATK Mohun Bagan 0(4) - (3)0 Hyderabad FC

Two of the best defences in Hero ISL went head-to-head in the Hero ISL semi-final and stayed true to their reputation as no goals were scored in 210 minutes of football over two legs. In the penalty shootout, ATK Mohun Bagan - playing at home in the second leg - held their nerve thanks to heroics from goalkeeper Vishal Kaith as Javier Siverio and Bartholomew Ogbeche missed from the spot to give the Mariners a 4-3 win and a place in the final.
