Stat attack: NorthEast United FC look to end hoodoo, Naorem Mahesh eyes milestone
A look at some interesting statistics ahead of East Bengal FC's game against NorthEast United FC.
East Bengal FC face NorthEast United FC in their sixth match of the Indian Super League (ISL) Matchweek 8. NorthEast United FC are unbeaten in five of their last six encounters against East Bengal FC with a 3-1 loss against the Red and Gold brigade during the 2022-23 season being their sole loss in this run.
The Highlanders sit four points ahead of the Kolkata giants albeit having played a game more but will go to the city of joy hoping to put an end to a terrible record attached to the team. On the other side, East Bengal's starlet has a chance to own a very significant record during the game.
Here's a look at those key figures.
NorthEast United FC away-day blues
NorthEast United FC has had a positive start to the 2023-24 Indian Super League season. They sit in sixth position in the table with nine points from their first seven games. They have won two games, drawn thrice and lost twice so far in the league.

Although they face East Bengal FC on a positive run of form, their away form over the last few seasons has not been up to the mark. They have been winless in each of their last 20 games in the ISL, with five draws and fifteen losses in those games. It is the longest such streak by any side in the competition’s history. The last time they won on the road was a 1-0 win against Hyderabad FC during the 2019-20 season.
Naorem Mahesh eyes record
Naorem Mahesh has continued his fine form from the previous season into this season, with two goals scored in East Bengal FC’s first six games. He has mostly started on the left flank as a winger for East Bengal FC. Possessing raw pace, he has used his speed to devastating effect, causing a lot of trouble for the league’s defenders. He drifts into central attacking positions as the game goes on. His movements also create a lot of space for his fellow East Bengal FC attackers to exploit and he often finds himself running through on goal using those spaces.
He also holds the record for the joint most wins in the competition’s history (along with Ankit Mukherjee) for the club. He has recorded eight wins with East Bengal FC in the ISL. A win in the game against NorthEast United FC would make him the player with the most wins registered with East Bengal FC in the ISL.
