The 22-year-old midfielder had starred for FC Goa, linking up with André Santos, lifting Goa from the bottom of the standings and propelling them into the semi-finals.One of the most clever and skilful Indian players, Fernandes scored three goals for the Zico-coached side and registered 11 shots on target in his 11 appearances. He even has two assists to his credit, but putting aside these marvellous statistics, more importantly, he earned the faith and confidence of his legendary coach."He helps us a lot, in training, before the match and on the field," Romeo had said about his mentor. The Brazilian legend too heaped praise on the youngster stating that Fernandes’ performance on the field was a reflection of his hard work; that he could only guide him and give him confidence letting him play. He believed that Fernandes repaid his faith with inspiring performances throughout.Click here to watch Romeo Fernandes scoring ISL's 100th goal.Even former Arsenal legend Robert Pirès, who Fernandes shared the dressing room with during the ISL, was very vocal about his admiration for the midfielder who operates on the flanks.
