The All India Football Federation (AIFF), on Tuesday, named Sunil Chhetri the ‘AIFF Player of the Year’ while young midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad was recognized for his exceptional breakthrough season with the prestigious ‘AIFF Emerging Player of the Year’ title. For 34-year-old Chhetri, it was his sixth 'Player of the Year' award. For 22-year-old Samad, on the other hand, it was the first AIFF-bestowed honour of his nascent career.

Since the announcement, fans from all around India came out on social media to laud the effort and commitment shown by the players for both club and country. To recall, Chhetri was brilliant in India’s AFC Asian Cup run and played a central role in Bengaluru’s march to their first Hero ISL title. Sahal, meanwhile, stole the limelight in Kerala Blasters' disappointing Hero ISL campaign, demonstrating prodigious talent. He has also impressed in his brief stint in the India jersey, showing some great promise.

The players' respective Hero ISL clubs were among the first ones to congratulate the players.

Indian football fans quickly followed suit, raising a toast to the legend and the future star.
