Once again, Dimitri Petratos emerged as the pivotal figure for Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Indian Super League (ISL), playing a crucial role in securing silverware for the club for the second consecutive season.

Throughout the season, the Australian showcased his brilliance, contributing significantly to Mohun Bagan SG's historic League Shield triumph. Petratos' instrumental presence also propelled the Mariners to their second consecutive ISL final appearance, albeit ending in defeat to Mumbai City FC in the ISL Cup, where the Islanders staged a remarkable comeback.

With 10 goals and seven assists in 23 appearances for the Mariners, the Australian forward received the ISL Golden Ball award for the 2023-24 season for being the Best Player of the Tournament.

A season of brilliance

The ISL 2023-24 season showcased numerous standout moments for the forward, highlighting his significance beyond scoring goals.

Out of the 20 matches he featured in during the league stage, he only failed to contribute a goal or an assist in seven games. Particularly towards the end of the league stage, he played a crucial role, recording a goal contribution in the team's last seven matches.

Petratos played a pivotal role in Mohun Bagan SG's League Shield triumph, providing both assists in the decisive match against Mumbai City FC and assisting Manvir Singh's opener in the first leg of their semi-final.

While he started the season strongly with a goal and an assist in the opening fixture, his form dipped temporarily. However, since Antonio Habas' arrival, he regained his form, netting seven goals in 12 league games and proving vital to their Shield victory.

Petratos also stood out for his creative prowess, jointly leading the league with the highest number of goal-scoring chances created alongside FC Goa's Brandon Fernandes.

The journey

Petratos joined the Mariners in July 2022, quickly earning a reputation as both a prolific goal scorer and a key playmaker. In his debut ISL season, he shared the top spot for goals scored (12) with Cleiton Silva and Diego Mauricio, the Golden Boot winner of the 2022-23 season.

Despite a shaky start filled with missed opportunities, Petratos swiftly established himself as one of the league's most clinical strikers. By the second half of the 2022-23 season, he had become the team's primary attacking threat.

In the 2023-24 season, Petratos continued to excel, forming a formidable partnership with new signings Jason Cummings and Armando Sadiku. Across his two seasons with Mohun Bagan SG, Petratos has amassed an impressive tally of 22 goals and 14 assists, while also creating 121 goal-scoring chances.

Making his mark at Mohun Bagan SG

In just two years since his arrival in the City of Joy, Petratos has already endeared himself to the fans, becoming a dependable figure in their quest for success. His contributions have been pivotal in Mohun Bagan SG's pursuit of silverware over the past two seasons.

Notably, he played a crucial role in last season's final against Bengaluru FC, scoring a brace to force penalties, ultimately leading to the Mariners' triumph in the ISL Cup. Petratos also netted the winning goal in the Durand Cup 2023 final against arch-rivals East Bengal FC, ending a 23-year title drought. His instrumental role continued in Mohun Bagan SG's League Shield triumph this season, where he provided assists for both goals in the decider against Mumbai City FC.

The partnership between Mohun Bagan SG and Petratos has proven to be a match made in heaven. As another remarkable season concludes, the Australian forward will be eager to build upon his heroics and add more trophies to his collection.
