Rohit Mirza© ISLFormer international Steven Dias (Delhi Dynamos) and current international Raju Gaikwad (Mumbai City FC) may be the most famous Mumbaikars who will be plying their trade in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL), well known to the nation’s football fans for their exploits with the country’s leading clubs and the national team. But a few months down the line a few more Mumbai footballers could be knocking on the doors of national recognition. There are seven Mumbai footballers in all who will be seen in action in the upcoming ISL. Apart from the aforementioned duo, the others are Pratik Shinde, Ashutosh Mehta (both FC Pune City), Rohit Mirza (Team Mumbai), Jayesh Rane and veteran Dane Pereira (both Club Chennai). Interestingly, the last four all hail from Mumbai FC, the maximum city’s sole representative remaining in the I-League after the exit of mighty Mahindra United, Air-India and ONGC.The club, coached by former India midfielder Khalid Jamil, may never win the I-League, but the club’s young guns could well make a splash in the ISL for their respective clubs, according to Mumbai FC’s manager and former international Henry Picardo.Picardo, who turned out for Air-India as right back earlier, has high hopes for the Surat-born Mehta, perhaps the only Gujarati playing top-level football in the country, and Mirza, both midfielders, dubbing them the “finds of Indian football” who are quite capable of taking on and outshining the marquee players on the pitch.“They are young and want to learn. They want to make a name for themselves and they want to be the best.”Henry Picardo, Former India playerHaving watched them come up through the junior ranks, the former Maharashtra Santosh Trophy captain is confident enough to say that both players are “ready for the kill”.Mehta has played the maximum number of games for the Mumbai FC last season and was one of their key outfielders. Last March, he scored what Picardo feels is the club’s best goal last season against East Bengal at the Salt Lake Stadium to tie the I-League match 2-2. He had offers from a few of the big clubs because of his performances, but chose to extend his contract with his boyhood club for one more season.Mirza may not have played many games for the club, considering that he was a substitute for the incomparable Yusif Yakubu, but Picardo feels that he will grow. “Rohit may be young but he can outpace anyone on the football circuit,” he says.Striker Rane, the youngest of the lot, is the “most versatile” player, feels the official. But what makes all three special is that they can fit into any position on the field. “They are young and want to learn. They want to make a name for themselves and they want to be the best,” he affirms. Maybe they will!
