With Mumbai City FC seven points clear at the top of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) standings and yet to be defeated this season, one might wonder if there is any other side that could catch them.

However, second-placed Hyderabad FC have a chance to close down that gap with a game against the league leaders next at the Mumbai Football Arena, on Saturday. With a game in hand, a win over the Islanders could see Manolo Marquez’s side inch closer to the top spot, reducing their deficit to four points.

Mumbai City FC have registered only two wins against Hyderabad FC in Hero ISL history, which is the least they have against any Hero ISL side. Surprisingly, this season, the latter are the only team remaining that are yet to be beaten by the Islanders.

Manolo Marquez's men managed to maintain this record last season as they won the Hero ISL title, winning both their league games against the Islanders.

More league and club records in the offing

Mumbai City FC have already broken a handful of records this campaign. They have already scored the most goals (47 and counting) by any team in a season and are currently on the longest winning streak in Hero ISL history, after 11 straight victories.

The Islanders have secured 42 points from 16 matches this season. A win against Hyderabad FC will see them break the record for most points in a single Hero ISL season. Only three clubs have managed to pick up 40 or more points in a single Hero ISL season. Jamshedpur FC set a new record for the most points in a single season (43) during Hero ISL 2021-22, romping to the League Shield.

A win for the Des Buckingham-coached side would also help them set a new record for most wins in the league stage by any Hero ISL team. That would see them match Bengaluru FC’s record of 14 wins in a single Hero ISL season, which the Blues set during their inaugural 2017-18 season.

On the other hand, three points for Hyderabad FC in Mumbai would see them set a new club record for most wins during the league stage. With 11 wins this season, Marquez’s side have already matched their record from last season.

Hyderabad FC have registered a joint-high tally of seven clean sheets alongside Mumbai City FC and ATK Mohun Bagan. A clean sheet against Mumbai City FC would see them script a new club record of most clean sheets in a Hero ISL season.

The southern side will end up with 38 points if they manage to win, helping them match their most points tally of 38 points from the previous season.

A win for either team on Saturday could not only have a major impact on the League Shield race, but help these two respective teams set some new records. But regardless of whoever wins, in terms of consistency, Mumbai City FC and Hyderabad FC have been a cut above the rest.
