Mohun Bagan Super Giant are threatening to run away with the League Shield in the Indian Super League (ISL) this season and hold a six-point lead over second-placed FC Goa with eight games to play.

The Mariners have lost just twice this season and both defeats have come against the two teams that are just below them in the table. Jose Molina’s team have the joint best attack in the league and comfortably the best defence in the ISL. They have conceded six fewer goals than the second-best defensive team in the league.

Thus the defenders are leading Mohun Bagan SG’s League Shield charge and they are doing so in more ways than one. The Mariners’ defenders haven’t just been keeping the back door shut, they have been significant contributors at the other end with goals.

Defenders have scored 11 of Mohun Bagan SG’s 31 goals which has given them a huge edge on attacking set-pieces. The Mariners have scored more goals from dead-ball situations (16) as they have from open play this season (15).

This goal tally from set-pieces is the highest in the league and is proving to be the difference between Mohun Bagan SG and the rest of the league. Goals from set-pieces have helped the Mariners gain 11 extra points this season, a season-defining points tally.

Consistent goals from set-pieces is a blessing to have as it gives you the chance to unlock games which teams may otherwise struggle to open. It gives teams an alternate route to the back of the net when it’s hard to find goals through open play.

Strength on set-pieces is key in tight battles for big prizes and Mohun Bagan SG have mastered that art and are reaping the benefits of it.

Molina’s team are just two goals away from equaling the record for most goals scored from set-pieces in a single season and have plenty of time to set a new record.

While there is a heavy focus on tactics used in modern football and how teams innovate to find different ways to the opponent’s goal. Set-pieces remain a very effective and direct way to score for a team and Mohun Bagan SG who are a very attack-minded team have further highlighted that point this season.

Mohun Bagan SG still have work to do in order to defend their League Shield and their set-piece dominance could make all the difference come the end of the league season in March.
