ISL 2024-25: Top Goalkeepers to watch out for
From Lachenpa to Gill, we’ve compiled a list of goalkeepers poised to deliver standout performances in the upcoming ISL season.
The Indian Super League (ISL) is set to return with exhilarating fixtures and high-octane clashes starting September 13. Goalkeepers will once again be key to their respective teams' fortunes in the new season.
Despite often being overlooked, the spotlight inevitably gravitates toward goalkeepers during crucial moments. These custodians frequently display leadership qualities at the defensive line, proving their mettle by playing a pivotal role in shielding the goal and guiding their teams to new heights.
Goalkeepers not only stand firm between the sticks but also contribute significantly to orchestrating offensive moves and build-up play. With their sharp anticipation, cat-like reflexes, and agile footwork, they are adept at delivering match-deciding fingertip saves while absorbing the immense pressure during critical moments.
As the eleventh season of the ISL approaches, we have listed some goalies who are poised to have a significant impact on their teams.
Phurba Lachenpa (Mumbai City FC)
Phurba Lachenpa has emerged as one of the finest goalkeepers in the country. The Mumbai City FC custodian won the ISL Golden Glove award last season and played a crucial role in the Islanders’ ISL Cup victory.
Since joining Mumbai City FC in 2020, Lachenpa has featured in 48 games and recorded 17 clean sheets. Given the 26-year-old’s exceptional shot-stopping abilities, the Islanders’ solid defensive line could once again prove formidable in the upcoming season, especially after having conceded the fewest goals in the previous campaign.
ISL Fantasy potential: Priced at Rs 6 CR, Lachenpa could be a solid option with Mumbai City FC boasting the best defensive record last season.
Vishal Kaith (Mohun Bagan SG)
Vishal Kaith's stellar performances throughout the league-stage fixtures culminated in Mohun Bagan SG’s first-ever ISL Shield triumph last season. Kaith, the cornerstone in the Mariners’ defense line, recorded the joint-highest number of cleansheets (9) besides Lachenpa in the ISL 2023-24 season.
The Himachal Pradesh-born goalkeeper has been a regular face in the league over the last seven years. Boasting the experience of playing 119 ISL matches, Kaith’s presence is going to have a huge impact on Mohun Bagan SG’s potential outcome from the upcoming season.
ISL Fantasy potential: Priced at Rs 6 CR, Kaith is an expensive option but could prove to be of value with Mohun Bagan SG boasting a strong defensive record last season. Additionally, his save points would be instrumental for your team.
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (Bengaluru FC)
Known for his standout performances under the bar and his leadership qualities, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu will be an integral part of the Blues’ starting eleven and will be determined to reach new heights with the club in the upcoming season. The veteran goalkeeper, who has 138 ISL appearances to his name and has kept 44 clearances in the league, has won the ISL Golden Glove award twice in the 2018-19 and the 2019-20 season.
Despite Bengaluru FC failing to qualify for the playoffs, Sandhu registered the second-highest number of saves (70) last season.
ISL Fantasy potential: Priced at Rs 5.5 CR, Sandhu could emerge as a shrewd pick for your team given his experience and save potential.
Amrinder Singh (Odisha FC)
The Odisha FC captain concluded the ISL 2023-24 season with the joint-highest number of cleansheets (9) and also topped the list of the most saves by keepers. Singh led the Kalinga Warriors to register their first-ever playoff qualification last season.
The seasoned campaigner has featured in 162 games in the ISL, keeping 46 cleansheets in total. With his experience and leadership qualities, Singh will be keen to replicate his performances from last season.
ISL Fantasy potential: Priced at Rs 5 CR, Singh could be a handy pick for your fantasy team considering his impressive records over the years.
Prabhsukhan Singh Gill (East Bengal FC)
Having established himself as East Bengal FC's first-choice keeper under Carles Cuadrat last season, Prabhsukhan Singh Gill will be keen to get back to his best, having won the ISL Golden Glove during the 2021-22 season.
The 23-year-old was solid at the backline and kept seven clean sheets for the Kolkata-based club last season. He also registered 54 saves, finishing in the top five list of goalkeepers with most saves from last season.
ISL Fantasy potential: Priced at Rs 5.5 CR, Gill could be a smart differential pick, having helped East Bengal FC maintain a strong defensive record in the previous campaign.
Sachin Suresh (Kerala Blasters FC)
Despite being out of action for a huge period after sustaining a shoulder injury last season, Sachin Suresh was impressive between the sticks for Kerala Blasters FC. The Blasters’ custodian kept five clean sheets in his 15 appearances last season, averaging two saves per game.
The 23-year-old Kerala-born goalkeeper showcased his expertise in saving penalty kicks with his exceptional anticipation skill, recording the joint-highest number of penalty saves (2) last season.
ISL Fantasy potential: While it remains to be seen how the Blasters will fare defensively under new head coach Mikael Stahre, Suresh, priced at ₹5.5 CR, is likely to be a popular pick. His ability to stop shots and penalties could earn you valuable points.
