Matchweek 2 of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season saw several teams display their fighting spirit. Out of the five matches played, three featured come-from-behind wins, while FC Goa left it late to secure a draw against Mohammedan Sporting Club, denying them their first victory.

A total of 21 goals were scored across these matches, with no goalless draws, highlighting the competitiveness of the action.

As another exciting Matchweek draws to a close, let’s have a look at the major talking points.

Age is just a number for Sunil Chhetri

After starting the season opener against East Bengal FC, Sunil Chhetri began on the bench for the match against Hyderabad FC. Despite taking an early lead through Rahul Bheke, the hosts struggled to penetrate a resolute Hyderabad defence, missing several chances.

Chhetri was introduced before the hour mark and quickly changed the complexion of the game. He scored twice within nine minutes, first converting a penalty and then netting a close-range header in injury time. His second goal was particularly impressive, as he positioned himself perfectly to divert the ball into the far corner with a clever diving header. This performance highlighted Chhetri's hunger for goals and his ability to deliver, even as he continues to age.

Nihal Sudeesh, Punjab FC’s gem

Punjab FC made several exciting signings during the summer transfer window, and one standout performer among the new arrivals is young winger Nihal Sudeesh. He earned the Player of the Match award in their opening victory against Kerala Blasters FC, delivering an impressive performance against his former club. Sudeesh followed this up with another strong display in their win over Odisha FC, causing problems with his pace, movement, and delivery.

His goal put Punjab FC ahead, as he expertly tucked his shot into the far corner, easily beating Amrinder Singh, one of India’s finest goalkeepers. Head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis previously revealed that Sudeesh was not part of his initial plans, but his progress in training changed that perspective. Given his performances in the first two matches, the Kerala-born player has clearly demonstrated his ability to influence results and make a significant impact in attack.

Another statement win for Jamshedpur FC

Jamshedpur FC's opening win over FC Goa was hard-fought, and their match against the defending ISL Cup winners promised to be one of their toughest challenges yet. In their first home game of the season, the Men of Steel not only put in a performance their fans could be proud of but also secured a statement win, coming from behind to claim three points against a formidable side like Mumbai City FC.

Coach Jamil executed his plans perfectly by pairing Jordan Murray with Javier Siverio up front, while Javi Hernandez showcased his talent in midfield, creating opportunities and inflicting damage before it was too late for the Islanders to respond. With victories over two teams that reached last season's semi-finals, Jamshedpur FC is firmly establishing themselves as a side to be taken seriously.

Redemption for Kerala Blasters FC

If the loss to Punjab FC at home was painful, it would have been truly heartbreaking for the Blasters to suffer another defeat in front of their passionate supporters. Mikael Stahre’s side appeared to be heading for defeat when local hero PV Vishnu put East Bengal FC ahead in Kochi. However, the Blasters turned the tide, delivering a performance that secured Stahre his first win as head coach. This display, particularly after a challenging opening half, pointed to brighter days ahead.

Noah Sadaoui’s solo goal showcased his exceptional skill, while substitute Kwame Peprah highlighted the attacking quality at their disposal with a well-taken strike. If this match is any indication, Blasters supporters have every reason to be excited about what they might witness under Stahre's management.
