The race for the League Shield in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 is heating up as the top five teams battle it out to close the gap on league leaders Odisha FC. Despite the intense competition, all five teams are still in the running for the shield as we enter Matchweek 18.

Meanwhile, at the back of the pack, there is just a five-point difference between the best of the rest, from sixth to eleventh place. Each team has a fair chance of qualifying for the playoffs and securing a spot in the next round.

Matchweek 18 starts with a double-header as Punjab FC plays host to Mumbai City FC followed by the second chapter of the southern rivalry which plays out at the Kanteerava as Bengaluru FC takes on the travelling Kerala Blasters FC.

On Sunday it will be Chennaiyin FC taking on the ISL League leaders Odisha FC at home. Hyderabad FC test their grit against NorthEast United FC on Monday. Wednesday will witness an exciting clash between FC Goa and East Bengal FC at the Fatorda, followed up with NorthEast United FC playing Punjab FC at the home of the Highlanders.

Last but not least, we will be treated to a clash between Jamshedpur FC and Mumbai City FC at the Furnace as Matchweek 18 comes to a close.

Can KBFC end a winless run in Bengaluru?

Bengaluru FC has an illustrious tradition of never losing at home against their arch-rivals, Kerala Blasters FC, throughout all the previous iterations of the ISL. However, this season of the ISL may prove to be different, as the upbeat Blasters, who recently ended their mid-season crisis with a 4-2 victory over FC Goa, are now set to challenge the Blues at Kanteerava, their stronghold. This could be the toughest siege the Blues have ever faced to their fortress by their arch-rivals. 

As for the Blasters, they would want to put the record straight especially after last season's defeat to the Blues in the playoffs.

A must-win game for both

Chennaiyin FC and their head coach Owen Coyle are set to face a tough challenge from Spanish tactician Sergio Lobera's powerful Odisha FC. The Kalinga Warriors are looking to collect crucial points in their bid to maintain their lead at the top of the league table, and this game against the desperate Marina Machans will be no exception.

Will this match be another step forward for Odisha FC in their quest for shield glory, or will the Marina Machans be able to stop them in their tracks at the Marina Arena and boost their playoff chances?

Can the Gaurs return to their winning ways?

FC Goa will host Kalinga Super Cup winners, East Bengal FC, at Fatorda. Both teams will be looking to turn their fortunes around and get back on track as we near the business end of the season's league fixtures. The head coach of the Gaurs, Manolo Marquez, will be trying to outplay and outthink his fellow Spaniard at home to put an end to his worst winless spell in the history of the ISL.

Meanwhile, East Bengal FC will have their work cut out for them, with a poor performance in almost all away games this season. One team is challenging for the Shield, while the other is looking to keep their playoff hopes alive. Intense battle on the cards.

In-form teams face off in playoff six-pointer

NorthEast United FC and the Punjab FC have been performing exceptionally well since the recent international break. The Highlanders have managed to accumulate seven points from four games, which includes wins against East Bengal FC and FC Goa. Meanwhile, the Shers have won three out of their four games since the break, most notably a devastating win against Kerala Blasters FC away, and Bengaluru FC at home.

It remains to be seen who will come out on top as the Shers of the North face off against the hosts. Will Punjab FC manage to secure a win, or will NorthEast United FC prove to be too strong? Alternatively, will both teams fail to break the deadlock and settle for a draw as in their previous meeting, adding one point each to their tally in the race for the sixth qualifying position in this season's ISL?

Can Khalid Jamil's men stun the Islanders again?

Khalid Jamil has had a fantastic start to his tenure as head coach of Jamshedpur FC this season. His most significant contribution to the team has been building consistency within the ranks. The Men of Steel are currently vying for the last playoff spot of the season and have a great chance of securing it.

Jamshedpur FC has a remarkable track record of outperforming themselves whenever they have faced Mumbai City FC in the past. They have a win rate of 43% against Mumbai City FC's 36% in head-to-head comparisons.

This was once again demonstrated in the reverse fixture when they made a magnificent comeback to snatch all three points away from the Islanders at the Mumbai Football Arena. It remains to be seen if Mumbai City FC can make amends for their only home loss this season or if the Men of Steel will continue their solid record against the Islanders.
