© ISLThe Hero Indian Super League (ISL) will not only be Steven Dias’ last chance but also the perfect platform to impress India coach Wim Koevermans and reclaim his place in the national squad. The 30-year-old Mumbai midfielder maestro was known as “the David Beckham of India” for his expertise in dead ball situations and pin point crosses from the right flank. He was also one of the star performers with Bob Houghton’s ‘Blue Tigers’ that won the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, 2009 Nehru Cup and also figured at the 2011 Asian Cup finals in Qatar. But after earning 51 international caps and netting seven goals, Dias has been in international limbo since mid-2011. An ill-fated move to the since folded up Mumbai Tigers saw him drop out of sight for most of the 2013-14 season barring the last few months when he went on loan to Rangdajied United and helped them stave off relegation. But the ISL has arrived at the right time and will give Dias an opportunity to showcase his bagful of tricks and impress the national coach.“I have always enjoyed playing in Delhi during the Nehru Cup and Durand Cup," Dias said shortly after being picked by the Delhi Dynamos for the inaugural edition of the ISL. “I have always enjoyed playing in Delhi during the Nehru Cup and Durand Cup"Steven Dias, Delhi DynamosHe also hopes his considerable experience (Dias has won I-League titles with both Mahindra United and Churchill Brothers) will serve him in good stead on the pitch. Off the pitch he will try to mentor younger players and help mould their careers.Dias’ advice to the youngsters stemming from his own personal experience is to aim big but start small and take it one step at a time:“I have noticed one thing with the kids. They always want to play for a big club. They don’t want to struggle and rise. They would much rather be on the rolls of a big club like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal rather than on the pitch with a smaller outfit. I just want to tell them to start their career in any small club and rise through the ranks step by step.”For a person who has been born and bred in the home of Indian cricket, Dias, whose twinkle toes sparkle as much on the pitch as they do on the dance floor, has surprisingly grown up in a total football environment in the eastern suburbs of the maximum city. It was no surprise that he took to the beautiful game, beginning his pro career with Air-India and later becoming a regular in the national squad.
