Since joining the Indian Super League (ISL) in the 2020–21 season, Mohun Bagan Super Giant have firmly established themselves as one of the league’s most dominant sides. This is their fifth season in the ISL, and they've qualified for the playoffs every single time—a remarkable consistency that includes two back-to-back League Shields and now three consecutive ISL Cup final appearances.

Out of their four appearances in the Cup final, the Mariners have finished runners-up twice. Their sole ISL Cup triumph came in the 2022–23 season against Bengaluru FC, whom they’ll face again this Saturday. With the League Shield already secured this year, the Mariners have a golden opportunity to complete the League double, a feat they narrowly missed last season. And what better place to do it than at their fortress in Kolkata?

Let’s rewind and look at how their journey in the ISL finals has unfolded:

ISL 2020–21 Final

In their debut ISL season, the Mariners finished level on points with Mumbai City FC in the league stage but ended up second due to an inferior head-to-head record. The two sides met again in the final, with David Williams giving the Kolkata side an early lead. However, Mumbai City FC got back into the game through an own goal by Tiri.

The match looked set to head into extra time, but Bipin Singh emerged as the hero for Mumbai, scoring the Cup-winning goal in the 90th minute. Despite the loss, the season laid a solid foundation for future campaigns.

ISL 2022–23 Final

The 2022–23 season marked a turning point for Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Under Juan Ferrando, the Mariners lifted their first ISL silverware. The final was a see-saw battle, with four goals equally shared to push the game into extra-time—three of which came from penalties.

Dimitri Petratos gave the Mariners the lead, but Sunil Chhetri equalized at the stroke of half-time with a precise penalty. Roy Krishna gave the Blues the lead in the 78th minute with a close-range header, but Petratos struck again from the spot.

With no winner in extra time, the game went to penalties. Vishal Kaith emerged as the hero for the Mariners in the shootout, while another missed penalty from the Blues handed MBSG their first ISL Cup title.

ISL 2023–24 Final

The 2023–24 season was again a special one, as the Mariners clinched their first League Shield under head coach Antonio Habas and reached their second successive ISL final.

In the grand finale, MBSG—buoyed by their home fans—started on the front foot. They dominated the first half and got their deserved lead through Jason Cummings just before the break.

However, Mumbai City FC turned the tide in the second half. Jorge Pereyra equalized just eight minutes after the restart, and then Bipin Singh and Jakub Vojtus added two more to break the Mariners’ hearts in the final for the second time.
