How Federico Gallego turned struggles into magic in the ISL
We take a look at how the Uruguayan rose from NorthEast United FC’s star to an ISL Cup winner with Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

The Indian Super League (ISL) has welcomed many gifted footballers, but few left as lasting an impression as Federico Gallego. Arriving at NorthEast United FC in 2018, the Uruguayan playmaker quickly transformed into the creative spark of a team that had long struggled to make its mark. With his vision, dribbling flair, and ability to unlock defences, Gallego didn’t just play for the Highlanders; he became their heartbeat.

His journey later took him to Kolkata, where he joined Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the 2022-23 season. Though often used from the bench, his experience and composure added valuable depth to an ISL Cup-winning squad. From Guwahati to Kolkata, Gallego’s story in India is remembered for its flair, resilience, and unforgettable moments.
A catalyst for change

NorthEast United FC had endured four tough seasons to begin their journey without a playoff appearance, even finishing bottom of the table twice. The Highlanders, in dire need of a change, brought in the experienced Bartholomew Ogbeche upfront, and for the creative spark, they relied on Gallego, a relatively unknown face. Expectations were low, but what followed was a magical turnaround.
The playmaker scored on his debut, which ended in a 2-2 draw with FC Goa. With his elegant passing, quick feet, and vision to unlock defences, the Uruguayan changed the tempo of many games. He even formed a solid partnership with Ogbeche in the final third. Gallego contributed four goals and four assists that season, guiding NorthEast United FC to a fourth-place finish and their first-ever playoff appearance. He was also the second-highest chance creator (41) behind Ferran Corominas that season.
Although they eventually fell short against Bengaluru FC in the semi-final, Gallego had sparked a transformation. While Ogbeche moved on to Kerala Blasters FC in the following campaign, Gallego returned on a permanent deal with the club.
Battling through injuries
The seasons that followed were a test of Gallego’s resilience. In 2019-20, he missed the first half of the campaign due to an injury which he carried over previous season and returned only in December. Despite flashes of brilliance, he could manage just one goal and one assist as NorthEast United FC slipped to ninth place.
But Gallego bounced back in 2020-21, producing his best season in India. Despite missing a few games, he delivered ten goal contributions, including six assists in 16 appearances. He also created the most chances (51) in the league, ten more than second-placed Alberto Noguera, despite playing four matches fewer.

With him pulling the strings, NorthEast United FC enjoyed their most successful league phase until then, finishing third and reaching the playoffs once again. Unfortunately, they fell short once again in the semi-final, this time against Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
The playmaker stayed on for another season, but the following campaign brought heartbreak, as a serious injury restricted him to just one appearance before ruling him out for the rest of the campaign. For fans, it was painful to see their midfield magician sidelined, but his bond with the club remained unbroken.
A champion’s send-off

In January 2023, Gallego made his return to Indian football by joining Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan Super Giant on a short-term deal. Though injuries had reduced his minutes, his experience and calm presence proved invaluable for a squad chasing silverware.
Mostly used as a substitute, Gallego didn’t score or assist, but his ability to slow down or quicken the game when needed proved useful in crucial moments. His presence added depth to the star-studded MBSG squad, and he played his part in helping Mohun Bagan Super Giant lift their first-ever ISL Cup. Despite featuring in only 12 matches, he was MBSG’s fourth-highest chance creator in the campaign.
It was the perfect farewell chapter, ending on the highest note possible: from being the creative force behind NorthEast United FC’s rise to contributing to an ISL Cup-winning campaign in Kolkata. Gallego may not have left behind staggering numbers, but he left behind something greater: memories of a player who embodied flair, fight, and love for the game.
