From winger to full-back and FC Goa’s game-changer: The evolution of Boris Singh
Singh has thrived in a new role as full-back for FC Goa this season, helping them fight for the League Shield.

When Boris Singh lined up as a right winger for FC Goa at the start of the season, few would have predicted that he’d be one of their most influential defensive players just months later. Known for his speed and attacking drive, Boris was expected to provide FC Goa with width and goal-scoring opportunities. But after a sluggish start to the season that included just one win in six games, head coach Manolo Márquez saw an opportunity in using him in a different role.
That change came a few months into the season when Boris was deployed as a full-back. Since then, FC Goa have transformed into one of the toughest sides in the league, going 12 games unbeaten and putting themselves back in the League Shield race. Boris has not only adapted to his new role, he has excelled in it. Now, as he prepares to face his former club, Jamshedpur FC, he does so as one of FC Goa’s most valuable assets.
A tactical gamble
FC Goa’s season had an underwhelming start. One win in six games isn’t exactly the form they needed for a strong start. The Gaurs struggled for balance, and Boris, while lively in attack, wasn’t influencing games the way he would’ve liked. But then came a tactical tweak from head coach Marquez, a switch that would not only redefine Boris’ role but also change the trajectory of FC Goa’s season.
The turning point? A 3-0 win against Bengaluru FC. That was the first time Boris played as a full-back, coinciding with the return of Sandesh Jhingan. Since then, FC Goa have been a different beast altogether — 11 games unbeaten, eight wins, and suddenly, they’re right back in the race for the League Shield.
The unsung hero
In the last 12 games, FC Goa have kept five clean sheets and conceded only 10 goals. Compare that to the first six games, where they also let in 10, and it’s clear something has clicked. Boris’ energy down the right flank has given FC Goa both defensive stability and an extra dimension in attack.
He has contested more duels than any other player in the squad and also ranks third for the most tackles, proving his defensive work rate has been as strong as his attacking instincts.
He isn’t just there to defend. Boris has already found the net as a full-back this season, scoring the only goal in their 1-0 win over Kerala Blasters FC, proving his capability of chipping in with crucial goals. His ability to seamlessly transition between defense and attack has made him one of the key players in Marquez’s system. The Gaurs rank third when it comes to most goals scored this season, on par with leaders Mohun Bagan Super Giant, and have the second-strongest defense in the league, trailing only the Mariners.
Facing familiar faces
As FC Goa continue their charge for the Shield, Boris faces Jamshedpur FC on Sunday at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, a club he once called home. It’s a full-circle moment, but this time, he’s not a young winger trying to make a mark. He’s a matured, evolved player who has mastered a new role and become a crucial piece of FC Goa’s puzzle.
Few players make the transition from winger to full-back look seamless, but Boris has done just that. His work rate, defensive contributions and attacking mindset have made him one of FC Goa’s most important players. With his former club up next, he’ll have the perfect stage to prove how far he’s come.
