After a tough Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 season in which Mumbai City FC finished in 5th place in the league stage and failed to qualify for the semi-finals, the Islanders now face a hard challenge as they begin their AFC Champions League campaign on April 8 with a match against Al-Shabab.

With a view on the continental competition, let us take a look back over the memorable moments of the 2021-22 Hero ISL season for MCFC.

Spanish Brilliance to start the season

What a way to start a new season! Igor Angulo carried his goal-scoring prowess from the Hero ISL 2020-21 season to the new season and bagged two goals in the opening match for the Islanders. The 38-year-old continued this fine form in front of goal and scored 10 goals for MCFC over the course of the Hero ISL campaign, and was the only player in the squad to get double-digits for goals scored.

Taking down the Mariners

In just their third game of the season Mumbai City FC earned an emphatic 5-1 victory over ATK Mohun Bagan and made a statement of intent for the other sides to see. The Islanders had four different goal scorers and thoroughly dominated the Kolkata-based side throughout the game, Des Buckingham’s men had 63% possession and had nine more shots on target than ATK Mohun Bagan.

Kryptonite to The Men of Steel

Just over a week after beating ATK Mohun Bagan, Buckingham’s side comprehensively defeated an unbeaten Jamshedpur FC, who later went on to win the Hero ISL League Winners' Shield. Similar to the game against ATKMB, the Islanders again had four different goal scorers in a 4-2 win.

MCFC had more possession of the ball, shots, and passes completed than the Men of Steel and ensured that they continued on their good start to the 2021-22 Hero ISL campaign.

Revenge served cold

The Mumbai-based outfit got revenge for the 4-2 trashing they faced at the hands of Odisha FC in the first match of the new year, after they beat OFC by a score line for 4-1. This result ensured that MCFC remains in the hunt for tightly-contested the semi-finals spots in the later stages of the Hero ISL.
