Mumbai City FC’s victory over Bengaluru FC on Sunday saw them leapfrog the Blues at the summit of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2018-19 table. More importantly, the victory ended Bengaluru’s 11-match unbeaten streak – the longest in the league’s history.  But how many teams have come close to replicating this mighty streak? Here we turn back the clock and dive into some of the most memorable unbeaten runs in the league.

Bengaluru FC (2018-19)

At the start of the season, concerns were raised about Bengaluru’s ability to emulate their lofty standards of 2017-18, considering the departure of head coach Albert Roca. However, the Blues have been equally impressive under Carles Cuadrat and began the season with a victory over arch rivals Chennaiyin FC. The Blues would go on to remain unbeaten for the next 10 matches – a truly remarkable achievement from Cuadrat and Co.

FC Goa (2014)

While Goa might not have emerged victorious in the inaugural Hero ISL, they did establish themselves as one of the league’s entertainers. After a poor start to the campaign, the Gaurs slowly gained momentum and went on a 10-match unbeaten run, starting with a goalless draw against Mumbai City FC. They finished the league phase in second position but ultimately bowed out to eventual champions ATK in the semi-finals.

Bengaluru FC (2017-18)

In their debut season in the league, the Blues were head and shoulders above the rest of the teams. Led by the likes of Sunil Chhetri and Miku, Bengaluru propelled their way to the top of the table. As the season wore on, they only got stronger, going on a 10-match unbeaten streak all the way to the final. Unfortunately, that run was halted when they suffered a 3-2 defeat to champions Chennaiyin FC in the grand finale on their own home turf.

ATK (2016)

After going close to defending their crown in 2015, ATK were determined to bring the title back home in 2016. Following a steady start to the campaign, the Kolkata giants stamped their authority on the rest of the chasing pack, going undefeated for eight matches before reaching the final. In the final against arch rivals Kerala Blasters FC, ATK clinched the tie on penalties after the score was tied at 1-1.

Mumbai City FC (2018-19)

The surprise package of this season, Mumbai City deservedly find themselves at the top of the standings. Despite beginning the season slowly, the Islanders have gained solid ground in their pursuit for a spot in the playoffs. Since their 5-0 loss to Goa in October, Jorge Costa’s men have gone undefeated in their last nine matches and don’t look like stopping anytime soon. Spearheaded by the likes of Modou Sougou and Paulo Machado, the Islanders have already banged in 21 goals this season.

Given their impressive form over the past few months, do they have what it takes to break Bengaluru’s record of the longest unbeaten streak in league?
