Mohun Bagan Super Giant stand tall as one of the season's remarkable success stories. The Mariners are on the verge of becoming only the second Indian Super League (ISL) outfit to achieve the ISL double.

A win in the cup final against Mumbai City FC will not only see them completing the double but also cap off a domestic treble season, having also secured the Durand Cup earlier in the campaign.

Despite a mid-season turmoil that saw them endure three consecutive losses in the league and an unexpected group-stage exit from the AFC Cup, the Mariners found their stride with the re-appointment of Antonio Lopez Habas as head coach. Displaying maturity and resilience, Habas’ side surged towards the end of the season, culminating in lifting the League Shield on the final day.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant won the league by a single point on the final matchday, having beaten second-placed Mumbai City FC 2-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium. Now, again on Saturday, they would be keen to repeat the same feat against the Islanders, this time for the ISL Cup.

Beyond the Numbers: Petratos' Versatility and Impact on the Field

Be it Ferrando’s Mohun Bagan SG or Habas’ Mohun Bagan SG, one huge factor in their success over the past two seasons has been the consistent form of their Aussie forward, Dimitrios Petratos. He has brought that "x-factor" to the side, which they’re missing in their first two seasons in the ISL. He has proven time and time again that he has the vision, decision-making, and ability to make a difference in any given circumstance.

Petratos is now the outright highest goalscorer for the Mariners in the ISL with 22 goals.  Last season, he was the joint-top scorer alongside Diego Mauricio and Cleiton Silva with 12 goals. This season, he has reached a double-digit goal-scoring tally with 10 goals from 22 appearances. When it comes to assisting, he has provided seven assists so far this season, which is similar to this stat from last season. This season he is averaging 0.77 goals or assists per game, almost similar to the 0.83 ratio of last season.

However, he is not just a mere goalscorer or an assist provider; there is much more to his game that has made him the go-to player for the Mariners and, of course, the fan favourite in the last two seasons. Since making his debut in the ISL, no player has created more goalscoring chances (120) than him.

The 31-year-old is a constant threat to the opposition's defence, getting into the box, shooting from distance, creating chances from deep, and converting chances. His ability to operate in the opposition half is second to none, and it is his work rate alongside all his qualities on and off the ball that makes him a valuable asset for Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

Last season, during the playoffs, he scored three goals in four matches, two of them coming in the final game against Bengaluru FC. Cut short to this season, he has once again taken responsibility in the most crucial period of the season. Petratos has failed to score or assist just once in the last nine matches for the Mariners, including two assists in the final league game against Mumbai City FC.

Now, when the Mariners take the field on Saturday for the mega final against Mumbai City FC, all eyes will be on Petratos, whose prowess on the field could be the decisive factor in achieving the historic feat for the Mariners.
