Bench boost: How substitutes powered Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s double
The Mariners have been leveraging their bench strength all season and their substitutes have made ten goal contributions this season.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant became just the second team in the Indian Super League (ISL) to win the League Shield and Cup double in a single season after a 2-1 comeback win over Bengaluru FC after extra time.
The Mariners were trailing by a goal till the 72nd minute before they launched their comeback. Jason Cummings and Jamie Maclaren scored the goals but the Kolkata Giants were hugely impacted by the substitutes that came off the bench.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant scored both their goals after Molina made changes to the team. It was substitute Greg Stewart’s pass in extra-time that found Maclaren in the box, allowing him to turn away from his marker and find the back of the net.
“I want to congratulate Mohun Bagan Super Giant. They are a great team. The difference between them and other teams is that they have two teams. The changes that they make can make a difference,” Bengaluru FC head coach Gerard Zaragoza acknowledged after the match.

Molina brought on Ashique Kuruniyan and Sahad Abdul Samad in the 62nd minute. The former was a constant menace on the flanks for the Blues and almost scored after a dazzling run late in the match. Sahal too got into dangerous positions and disrupted the organisation of the Bengaluru FC defence.
Stewart was instrumental in the winning goal while Dimitri Petratos who came on in extra-time brought much-needed calm and experience in the dying minutes.
"I have players on the bench, really great players. They had their moment. And today was the moment for Ashique and Sahal, they did great. Ashique was amazing in attack. In the end, maybe he was forced more to defend, controlling the match. And Sahal helped us to create something more," Jose Molina testified in his post-match press conference.
The Mariners have been leveraging their bench strength all season and their substitutes have made ten goal contributions this season. This strength was on show in the final as Molina used his full quota of substitutes to full effect and in the end made the difference for his team.
Jason Cummings has been Molina’s go-to man for impact from the bench as he has made five goal contributions as a substitute.Petratos, who netted a brace against Bengaluru FC in the final two seasons ago, along with Stewart have made two goal contributions each as substitutes.
The contributions from the bench is also a testament to Molina’s man management skills as he has managed to get his entire squad pulling in one direction irrespective of whether they are starting games or not.
The Mariners will head into the Kalinga Super Cup as favourites having swept the honours in the ISL and their strong squad will hold them in good stead as a long and exhausting Indian football season reaches its climax in Bhubaneswar. The treble is on for the Mariners.
