Mumbai City FC end their Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18 campaign with an away fixture against Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. The Islanders’ hopes of entering the semi-final were dashed when they lost 5-1 to Delhi Dynamos FC in their previous encounter and would play for pride to end their campaign on a winning note. The visitor’s striker Balwant Singh has been in good form for them throughout and is currently their highest goal-scorer with six goals and an assist to his name. On the eve of their final match, indiansuperleague.com caught up with the 31-year-old, who will face his former club, to find out his views on the season and more. Here are the excerpts.

What went wrong in the last match against Delhi?

We played good football but we conceded an early goal. Even after that, we played good and started well in the second half. We got a lot of chances, but we didn’t get the goal and then ended up conceded four goals. But I think, up until then we played well. This kind of things can happen in football.

Overall, how will you rate this season?

In some of the matches, we really played well. We created a lot of chances but didn’t get goals. We really can’t dwell on the past but everyone in the team gave their 100%.

On a personal front, how good has the season been for you?

I learnt a lot in this season and started well. In the last 5-6 matches, I haven’t been able to score, but I am trying a lot. I hope I will finish this season on a high note. For me, it is a learning process and I will learn every day.

Chennaiyin is your former club and after two successful seasons with them, how will it feel to play in Chennai in the away colours?

Yes, it is the first time I am playing here for a different team. It will be a different feeling in the stadium. The fans are still in touch with me and sends me wishes all the time. It will be a different experience for me.

Which youngster caught your eye this season?

I think, from Mumbai City FC there is Davinder (Singh), who is playing well and doing a great job. From Kerala Blasters FC, there is Lalruatthara in the left-back position, who is doing great. Even Jerry (Mawihmingthanga) from Jamshedpur FC and Anirudh Thapa from Chennaiyin FC are good players.
