NorthEast United FC have confirmed the signing of 21-year-old Uruguayan forward Martín Chaves for Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2019-20. He has penned a one-year deal and is the second foreign attacker signed by the club, following the acquisition of Argentine forward Maximiliano Barreiro a few days earlier.

Born in southwestern Uruguay, Cháves first caught everyone’s attention playing for the country’s U17 outfit and earned high praise for his performances. The youngster has played for Uruguayan clubs like Club Atlético Peñarol and Juventud de Las Piedras, mostly playing for their youth sides. He also had a brief loan stint with Brazilian top tier side, Gremio, representing their U20 side.

At NorthEast, Chaves will be playing alongside fellow countryman Federico Gallego, who impressed for the Highlanders last term. Known for his flair and ball control, the youngster could be an exciting prospect to look out for next season.

After a slow start to their transfer window, the Highlanders have picked up the pace in the last few weeks. Besides Barreiro, Robert Jarni and Co. have also signed Milan Singh in the last week, thereby filling the vacancy left by the departures of Bartholomew Ogbeche and Rowllin Borges.

The club had earlier secured the signings of Rakesh Pradhan, Wayne Vaz and Nim Dorjee Tamang, among others. Star midfielder Gallego, too, has agreed to stay put and may prove to be centerpiece for the Highlanders’ squad for 2019-20.
