Kerala Blasters FC began their Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2018-19 season with a bang, beating arch-rivals and two-time champions ATK 2-0 in Kolkata. More than the victory itself, head coach David James would have been pleased with the manner in which the win came about, as his side stamped their authority over the home side, denying ATK’s star players any time or space to work with.

Next up, the Blasters will host Mumbai City FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, who much-like ATK, didn’t have a positive result in their last match. Ahead of Friday’s game, indiansuperleague.com caught up for an exclusive interview with Blasters’ young midfielder and local boy, Sahal Abdul Samad. Here are the excerpts:

How does it feel like to get playing time in the opener?

It was a really great experience and I’m really proud. Playing with such experienced players gives me experience as well. So, it was really an honour.

Thoughts on the improvement of the quality of pitches?

Players and teams used to play on rough surfaces and now it’s changed to grass, which is another level. So, it’s really good and great.

Any message to young aspiring footballers?

If they have a dream to become a great footballer, work hard, and along with that, education is a must.

How does it feel to play under David James?

First of all, he’s a great coach, he’s a great player as well and he’s really approachable anytime. He’s really supportive.

What inspiration have you received from the coach?

He actually doesn’t separate us like a junior and a senior. He considers everyone equally.
