ATK Mohun Bagan head coach Antonio Lopez Habas is delighted with the signing of Finland midfielder Joni Kauko and believes the 30-year-old will add new dimensions to the Mariners’ game. Kauko joined the 2020-21 Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) finalists last month shortly after Finland exited Euro 2020.
“He is a multifunctional midfielder who can play throughout the central axis of the pitch. Moreover, he can adapt very quickly and very well to different playing systems. He is a strong, physical guy and along with that brings personality and leadership on the field. I think he will have a key role to play for us,” said Habas.
Kauko played in all three matches for Finland in Euro 2020. After a win over Denmark in their opener, defeats against Russia and Belgium followed and as a result the Finns finished third in their group and failed to advance to the next round.
As far his recent club football experience is concerned, Kauko played last three seasons for Danish club Esbjerg. “Hello Mariners. This is Joni Kauko. Greetings from Finland. I am really excited to join the historic club, ATK Mohun Bagan. I am looking forward to learning about the fascinating culture of India. So see you soon, Mariners. Take care," Kauko had said after joining the Mariners.
Earlier this week, the Kolkata giants also signed midfielder Deepak Tangri from Chennaiyin FC. Since losing the 2020-21 Hero ISL final to Mumbai City FC, they have brought on board four big names, with Liston Colaco’s signing from Hyderabad FC preceding those of Amrinder Singh, Kauko and Tangri. These signings are undoubtedly big proofs that the Mariners are looking to put their best foot forward in the upcoming AFC Cup.
