FC Goa manager Zico was seen inspecting the turf at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Pune, here this evening after light showers threatened to hinder his team’s training, before heading off to the conference room to address the media on Robert Pirès’ suspension, the patience required to build a winning team and other issues. Goa will take on hosts FC Pune City here tomorrow. The latter play their first game at home and both teams are still looking for a win in the campaign.“It’s always harsh when a player misses out on a match with suspension,” he quipped, taking about Pirès’ two-match suspension, and its possible impact on the match. “I hope it will not affect the performance of the team. We must always be prepared for such situations.”The Brazilian legend said he understands the tough decisions a referee has to make during a game, but added, “There are moments when the referees give a player a dressing down, when instead they should be taking action. Sometimes, they get it right, sometimes wrong.”When the attention shifted to the team’s performances, Zico said in reply to a question, “In football, everyone wants results fast. But you don’t get to know players overnight. We are an attacking team, and were so against all our previous opposition. We just need to translate these attacks into goals.”When questioned about tactics, he said, “I would like to implement a system, but as of now, we have to keep experimenting with the side, according to the players we have, and try and get the best out of the team.”Zico was joined by FC Goa winger Gabriel Fernandes, who is living every Goan footballer’s dream by playing under the legendary coach. “I would have never imagined playing under Zico. He’s such a great footballer, someone who’s revered by generations. My dad keeps telling me about him!” he gushes. “We have learnt so much from him, but the most important thing I’ve learnt is to always move the ball forward.”“Gaby” acknowledged that his team have not finished off their chances, but is confident that with a little bit of luck, the results will start coming.
