Injury-Hit Mumbai Return To The Mumbai Football Arena After Three Away Fixtures, With Both Sides Looking To Turn Early Promise Into Points
Mumbai: Mumbai City FC will bank on home comforts to put behind a stuttering start to their MG Indian Super League campaign when the Mumbai Football Arena hosts Sporting Club Delhi, in an early kick-off on Sunday.
Manolo Márquez’s side are still searching for their first win of the League, having collected two points from their opening three matches. Conversely, Sporting Club Delhi enter the fixture fresh from a 1-1 draw against FC Goa, eager to climb up from the lower half of the table.
Mumbai’s recent performances have offered some encouragement. After a 1-2 defeat to Churchill Brothers, they held Punjab FC to a 1-1 draw before keeping a clean sheet in a goalless encounter against Kerala Blasters FC. Márquez believes his side have made progress with each outing, but wants that improvement to translate into results. “Now we need to play at home and show character and show that we want and we can win our first game this season,” the Spaniard said.
The Islanders, however, continue to cope with injury concerns. Leandro Fumero has been ruled out for the season after suffering ACL and MCL injuries, while attacking options in Wilmar Jordán Gil and Vikram Partap Singh are also unavailable. Márquez has underlined the need for a recognised striker, reiterating his belief that adding a number nine would strengthen Mumbai’s prospects of finishing in the top six.
Sporting Club Delhi, meanwhile, arrive with belief in their playing identity despite having just one point from three matches. Head coach Tomasz Tchórz remains confident in his side’s ability to compete, and believes the disappointment following the Goa game reflects the squad’s ambition. “We were disappointed because we felt we could have won the game. This disappointment shows that we are capable of competing in this league and winning against everyone,” Tchórz said.
Tchórz also shared his assessment of how Mumbai City have evolved under Márquez, drawing a contrast with the side previously coached by Petr Kratky. “Under Petr Kratky, Mumbai were closer to the City Football Group style, similar to Manchester City. With Márquez, they are more pragmatic and approach different phases of the game differently. At FC Goa, we saw him use a more direct 4-4-2, with two strikers operating between the lines and the wingers attacking the space.”
The visitors also have a reminder of what they can achieve at the Mumbai Football Arena. Last season, they recovered from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Mumbai City, securing their first point of that campaign. Tchórz remembers the contest well and is keen to go one better this time.
The visitors have shown they can trouble established opponents, but will need greater control across 90 minutes. Mumbai, meanwhile, will look to make their homecoming count and give their supporters a first win to celebrate this season.
The match kicks off at 5:00 PM IST on Sunday, November 1, and will be streamed live on the MG ISL YouTube channel and Sony Sports Network.
