Zambrotta keeping feet on the ground despite big win

Gianluca Zambrotta’s first match in charge of Delhi Dynamos FC in Hero Indian Super League 2016 couldn’t have gone any better as they ran away with all three points after a commanding performance saw them beat defending champions Chennaiyin FC 3-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.

Zambrotta was clearly delighted with his side’s win but made it clear that it’s still early days in the league and that his squad must not get carried away with the result.

“The win has made me happy but we also have to think that we’ve just started the league and from tomorrow we have to think about the future match. I’m happy for tonight but tomorrow we start a new adventure,” said Zambrotta.

Zambrotta also believes a strong pre-season that saw the Lions travel to England and Sweden to take on the likes of West Bromwich Albion and Assyriska BollKlub has played a role in his team’s strong start to the season.

“We had a good pre-season for a month and then we came back to Delhi and we gelled well as a team. Everything has come together. We do our attacking runs together and hence we got the goals today. I think it all came together today,” he said.

A pulsating first half ended with the Lions going in at the break with a 2-1 lead. The second period saw a more cautious approach by the Dynamos as they looked to maintain their defensive shape. The win was finally beyond any doubt six minutes from time when super-sub Badara Badji headed past Duwayne Kerr in Chennai’s goal to make it 3-1. When asked what the reason behind his side sitting back in the second half was, Zambrotta said: “The first 50 minutes of the match was harder for us because they were tactically stronger for us. After half-time we played like we know and fortunately we’ve done a good job. Also, it’s very important we have to learn to close the match before and not to wait for the third goal. We have to learn to close the match.”

Zambrotta also provided an injury update on Anas Edathodika, who was withdrawn in the opening minutes of the second half. “Anas is with the doctor at the moment. He told me that he doesn’t know yet if it’s a massive problem or something minor. Wish Anas all the best but we have to wait till tomorrow for the updates from the medical team,” he said.
