As the Indian football team continue their preparations for a crucial international window, midfielder Brandon Fernandes has expressed confidence about the squad's readiness ahead of their friendly match against Thailand on June 4. The fixture, to be played in Thailand, comes just days before India’s crucial AFC Asian Cup Qualifier Round clash against Hong Kong on June 10.

India’s primary objective is clear: qualify for the AFC Asian Cup in 2027 and every game leading up to that mission carries weight. After a training camp in Kolkata, the Blue Tigers now shift focus to a more challenging test abroad, against a technically strong Thai side playing on home soil.

Brandon Fernandes, one of India’s most experienced midfielders, has been a vital figure in the national setup over the past few years. Known for his creativity and composure in tight spaces, the 29-year-old has been instrumental in orchestrating India’s attacks and is a natural leader in the middle of the park.

Speaking ahead of the friendly, Fernandes acknowledged the intensity of the preparations and noted that the squad is gelling well and showing encouraging signs.

“Everybody is looking fit after the camp in Kolkata. We also had a couple of practice games. We are in much better shape as we head into the Thailand leg of the camp,” the Mumbai City FC midfielder said to the-AIFF.com.

The June 4 fixture marks the third time India will face Thailand in the last six years and the familiarity between the sides adds an intriguing layer to the clash.

Thailand, ranked slightly above India in the FIFA standings, are known for their fluid attacking play and discipline off the ball. The Mumbai City FC player believes this challenge will serve as the perfect warm-up ahead of the Hong Kong game.

“Thailand will be a perfect challenge for us in order to prepare for the Hong Kong game. We have to put our best foot forward and look for a positive result.”

While the match against Thailand won’t impact India’s qualification directly, it’s crucial from a performance standpoint. India need momentum, confidence and rhythm going into the Hong Kong tie and friendly matches offer an ideal opportunity for head coach Manolo Marquez to test combinations and get players match-ready.

India’s last few outings have been a mixed bag and there’s growing anticipation around whether this current crop can deliver when it matters most. With Sunil Chhetri coming back and a new generation stepping up, senior figures like Fernandes carry extra responsibility both on and off the pitch.

The midfielder, however, is backing the team’s commitment and intensity as key reasons to remain optimistic.

“Everybody has put in the work, those hard yards, and yes — with the way we train and are putting in the shifts, I think we will get a good result,” he added.
