Taylor: We conceded poor goals

Kerala Blasters FC coach Peter Taylor chalked their 3-2 Hero Indian Super League Season 2 defeat by Kerala Blasters on Tuesday evening up to poor defending.

With four defeats in six matches, Kerala are now languishing at the bottom of the table and Taylor, speaking to the media after the game, wasn’t a happy man.

“I am not sure today was tough luck. We have to be defending much better. The first two goals we conceded today were poor goals for us…Unless we stop doing that, we are not going to get any luck. And we’ve to work hard to deserve that luck. We’ve got to defend properly and work hard and to be fair the players are working hard but we are conceding very bad goals,” Taylor told reporters.

Taylor said now the last year’s finalists needed to get their act together. “We now have to put up a fantastic show ahead, it’s as simple as that. It’s a short season, there’s only eight teams. If you could put together three good results, you’re in a much better position. It just means we’ve to put a good run together.”

When asked what was going inside his head when both sides went into the break at 2-2, Tayor said: “At half time, I thought that we could win the match. The way our front two were looking, Rafi and Chris Dagnall, I thought that we were looking dangerous and were a handful. So I probably wasn’t surprised when David Platt brought on Roger Johnson in the second half since I felt that they were struggling to deal with our front two. At half time I fancied us to win the game, I must be honest with you. But that third goal, was a good cross and a good header but for us it was a bad goal.”

Did Kerala miss their marquee player Carlos Marchena in the match? “He cannot play 90 mins at the moment, it’s difficult for him. He’s had a back injury which means he’s been unable to get match fitness and that’s very unlucky for him. Because of the conditions here in India and the rules, you cannot start a match with someone who you think cannot last it. He’s a very good player, he’s just been very unlucky with his back injury,” Taylor replied.
