Sunil Chhetri will miss Indian National Football Team's upcoming international friendly against Jordan on November 17 due to an ankle injury. He was named in head coach Stephen Constantine's list of 30 probables for the match to be played at the King Abdullah II Stadium in Amman but won't be travelling with the final squad which leaves for Jordan on November 15.

The 34-year-old sustained the injury during Bengaluru FC's last Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) match against Kerala Blasters FC on November 5 and the club's medical team has advised the striker around two weeks of rest. "The Bengaluru FC Medical Team have shared the MRI reports and medical assessments and we have scrutinised them thoroughly. Sunil needs rest of around two weeks and proper rehabilitation after which he can get back to training," said Indian National Team physiotherapist Gigy George in a press release from the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

"He can't travel with this injury as it's a weight-bearing joint. He needs to have proper rest along with the rehab programme for a speedy recovery. We are closely monitoring the situation and following it up with the club medical team and Sunil himself," added Indian National Team Doctor Shervin Sheriff.

Chhetri's absence will be a big miss for India, but it also provides Constantine the opportunity to test out and give game time to some of the promising young strikers ahead of the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2019. The likes of Sumeet Passi, Farukh Choudhary and Manvir Singh are in the list of 30 probables and may be handed a start in the veteran striker’s absence. Farukh and Sumeet have both scored for Jamshedpur FC this season in the Hero ISL, while Manvir found the net for FC Goa in their last match against Kerala.
