Chennaiyin FC confirmed former Liverpool hero and Delhi Dynamos FC centre-back from the second season, John Arne Riise as their marquee player for the upcoming edition of the Hero Indian Super League. The former Norwegian international became a mainstay in the Delhi Dynamos side that made their maiden semis appearance last year and will be looking to bring his vast experience to the Super Machans this season in their bid to defend the Hero ISL crown as reigning champions.

After Season 2, Riise joined Norwegian club Aalesunds FK and featured in 10 matches for them. Speaking on his return to the ISL and football following a little break, Riise said: “Back in June I decided to take a break from football but I always kept the door open for a return and after speaking to Marco [Materazzi, head coach at CFC] I found the motivation again to work hard. So I would like to thank Marco and the Chennaiyin FC owners for believing in me. Marco especially had a big influence on my decision. I am honoured to have the chance to play and work under Marco. Working closely with him will be a great experience for me for my future coaching career also.”

“I had a very interesting experience last year in India but this year I am more prepared and more excited and can’t wait to get started with Chennaiyin FC and help them retain the ISL trophy,” he added.

Reciprocating Riise’ goodwill, Chennaiyin head coach Materazzi said: “John has had a fantastic career already and was very consistent in last year’s ISL. He will be a very important player for us both on and off the pitch.”

The ex-Monaco, Roma, Fulham and APOEL defender appeared in 15 out of the Lions’ 16 matches in Season 2. More than capable with the ball at his feet and comfortable playing it out of defence, the ginger-haired defensive stalwart also offers a formidable presence at the back. He won more headers (42) than any other player from the Dynamos last year and also completed 38 tackles as well as 26 interceptions. Confident in attack, the 35-year-old chipped in with a goal and assist during his time with the Dynamos.

Chennaiyin FC co-owner Mrs Vita Dani also welcomed the veteran defender to the Super Machans squad. “We are delighted to have signed John as our marquee player for the 2016 ISL. He is a player with exceptional quality and experience. We look forward to having a great season from him,” she said.
