Gameweek 20 of the Hero I-League saw Mohun Bagan leapfrog Bengaluru FC to first spot on the table with a comfortable 2-0 victory over third-placed Royal Wahingdoh. Mumbai FC boosted their hopes of survival with a 2-1 win over East Bengal, while Sporting Clube de Goa secured a crucial 2-1 win at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Guhawati over Shillong Lajong to lift them out of the relegation zone.
Mohun Bagan crushed Royal Wahingdoh’s title aspirations at the Barasat District Sports Stadium with goals from Pritam Kotal (FC Pune City) and Sony Norde. Kotal’s attempted cross found its way into the net, catching the goalkeeper out of position in the 36th minute.
Ranti Martins (FC Goa) could only manage a consolation goal three minutes before the interval as the red and gold brigade succumbed to a 2-1 loss at the Cooperage ground in Mumbai, after the Mumbaikars had sailed into an early 2-0 lead with goals from Paresh Shivalkar and Josimar. Martins scored from a Leo Bertos through ball in the 42nd minute as he remains the league’s top scorer with 17 goals in 18 appearances.
