Season 2 of the Hero Indian Super League has seen all sides searching for the perfect balance in their respective squads. All eight teams went into the season with the ideal blend of youth and experience and that saw them record a fairly similar average age. FC Pune City fielded the oldest squad with an average age of 29.29 years, while Marco Materazzi’s Chennaiyin FC, one of the semi-finalists this season, sent out the youngest group of players with an average age of 27.33. Players from both sides of the age spectrum made their presence felt in the league, and indiansuperleague.com here takes a look at them.Chennaiyin FCThe youngest squad in the league with an average age of 27.33, Chennaiyin FC’s two 22-year-olds Jayesh Rane and Bruno Pelissari have made major contributions at different stages of the league stage. Rane made a strong start to the season by providing two assists in his five outings before being sidelined due to injury. Pelissari, on the other hand, was integral for Chennai towards the end of the league stage. The Brazilian has scored one goal and provided one assist this season. Stiven Mendoza (23), meanwhile, has taken his game to another level, scoring 11 goals with the help of two hat-tricks. Chennai’s oldest player Manuele Blasi (35) has also played a big role for Chennai in Season 2. The Italian midfielder has featured in 10 of Chennai’s 14 games so far and has made 36 tackles from midfield. Blasi also has the highest passing accuracy in the league at 93%.Delhi Dynamos FCDelhi Dynamos FC are the second youngest squad with an average age of 27.39 years. Their oldest player is none other than marquee player-cum-coach Roberto Carlos (42) who has graced the 2015 Hero ISL in three cameo appearances and looked as solid as ever. Their youngest player Zodingliana Ralte (20), better known as Adinga, has been given plenty of game time by Carlos this season and he has made the most of it. He has featured in 12 games and made an impressive 31 tackles from midfield.FC GoaFC Goa have the second oldest squad in the league with an average age of 28.8 years. Interestingly, their youngest and eldest players happen to be their first-choice central midfield duo – Leo Moura (37) and Jonatan Lucca (21). The Brazilian duo have been instrumental for their team this year and have combined for five goals (3 to Lucca and 2 to Moura) and 10 assists (2 to Lucca and 8 to Moura). Lucca is also second in terms of passes completed (469) by FC Goa players behind Leo Moura (724).Atlético de KolkataDefending champions Atlético de Kolkata are fifth in terms of average age (28.33). However, their youngest player Kunzang Bhutia (21) hasn’t featured this season. Nadong Bhutia, the next youngest at 22, has made two cameo appearances for the defending champions and impressed one and all. Juan Calatayud is the eldest in the ATK family. The 36-year-old Spaniard has made three appearances for Kolkata this season in which he has produced 12 saves.FC Pune CityFC Pune City fielded the oldest squad (29.29) in the league with marquee player Adrian Mutu being the oldest at 36. The Romanian striker netted four times for the Stallions this season, including two stunning free-kicks against Delhi Dynamos FC and NorthEast United FC. Their youngest player Fanai Lalrempuia (19), meanwhile, made three appearances for the Stallions this year and caught the eye with his pinpoint corners.Kerala Blasters FCKerala Blasters FC sent out the third oldest squad in the league (28.38) with goalkeeper Sandip Nandy as their eldest player at 40 years of age. Nandy started two games for the Blasters this year in which he made six saves. Their youngest player, 22-year-old Spanish Josu Currias sparkled at the centre of the park by providing three assists and scoring once.Mumbai City FCMumbai City FC fielded the fourth youngest squad (28.15) with Frederic Piquionne being the oldest at 37. The Frenchman made an impact by scoring three goals in his 12 appearances. Their youngest player Brandon Fernandes (21) also made a few appearances for Mumbai before his campaign was cut short by injury.NorthEast United FCNorthEast United FC sent out the third youngest squad in the league with an average age of 27.84. Their youngest, 19-year-old Alen Deory made two substitute appearances for the Highlanders this season, while their oldest player Silas (39) played an influential role for the Highlanders. The Portuguese veteran scored a goal and also provided an assist.
