Mumbai City FC winger Lallianzuala Chhangte won the Hero of the Month award for January 2023, a prize which is given to the best player in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) every month. 

As per the voting criteria, fans' votes count towards 50% of the vote share and experts' votes account for the remaining 50%. 

Chhangte received 18.34% of the fans’ votes but won 66.66% of the experts’ votes taking his cumulative percentage to 42.5% and making him the clear winner. 

Bengaluru FC’s Sivasakthi Narayanan finished as the runners-up with a 24.38 cumulative vote percentage followed by his Blues teammate Rohit Kumar, FC Goa’s Iker Guarrotzena and Mumbai City FC’s Joge Perreyra Diaz who were also in the race for the prize. 

The Islanders won all five matches in January scoring 15 goals in total. Chhangte scored four of those goals and played a key role in their run that put them in a very strong position to win the League Winners’ Shield. 

The 25-year-old has been in splendid form this season and has scored ten goals this season making him the top Indian goalscorer in the Hero ISL. He also has six assists to his name. 

Chhangte is the fourth player to achieve this award this season. ATK Mohun Bagan’s Dimitri Petratos won it in October followed by Mumbai City FC’s Bipin Singh in November before FC Goa’s Iker Guarrotzena was awarded the prize for December 2022.
