I have so much to do at Mumbai City FC: Lallianzuala Chhangte
With Chhangte set to continue at Mumbai City FC, he wanted to achieve greater success in the coming years.
Mumbai City FC’s star forward Lallianzuala Chhangte stated he has much more to contribute to the club and underscored the significance of improving his own game.
Hailing from Mizoram, Chhangte kicked off his football journey at DSK Shivajians FC. The forward later switched to the Indian Super League (ISL) and played for NorthEast United FC and then Delhi Dynamos FC before joining Chennaiyin FC in 2019.
Later in 2022, the 27-year-old left the Marina Machans to join Mumbai City FC. With the Islanders, he clinched the ISL League Shield in the 2022–23 season and won the ISL Cup in the 2023–24 season.
Recently, the winger penned a multi-year extension with Mumbai City FC that will run until the end of the 2026–27 season. Chhangte shared his delight and enthusiasm in committing to a long-term deal with the club and showered his confidence in making potential progress with Mumbai City FC.
"I strongly believe that Mumbai City FC are the right club for my future development," Chhangte told TOI.
"Since I came here, I didn't do bad. The club has been really good to me; the fans were amazing," he added.
In the ISL, Chhangte has 144 appearances, where he has notched 40 goals and registered 18 assists. Besides recording great numbers with his clubs, he made his national team debut in 2015. Since then, the forward has played 37 games for the Blue Tigers and registered eight goals.
Chhangte won the prestigious AIFF's Player of the Year accolade for the last two successive seasons. The footballer has also won accolades such as the FPAI Player of the Year, ISL Golden Ball, Durand Cup Golden Boot, and Best Player at the Tri-Nation tournament.
Underlying the significance of being consistent, Chhangte remarked,
"Consistency is really important, but one of the things that makes a player inconsistent is being resilient. You can have a hard season; you might drop out of the first 11 at some point because of a change in game plan, an injury, or anything (else). Some players, not all, are just not being consistent with eating the right food, doing the right things every single day.”
"It's not about the big things; it's the little details that make the difference. Some players, when they are injured or drop out (of the team), they just relax. They are not themselves. They just don't want to work anymore. When they have a great season, they are in their comfort zone. They don't want to work even harder. This has to change," he explained.
The dynamic winger also expressed his utmost desire to represent his country on foreign soil and play for clubs outside India someday but acknowledged that he is happy playing for Mumbai City FC.
Shedding light on his childhood aspiration, Chhangte acknowledged,
"Since I was a kid, my dream has been to play abroad. I still remember those days when I joined Liverpool FC International (Academy)-DSK Shivajians (Pune). It was my dream to one day play abroad, maybe at least in Asia, if not Europe. I still have the urge, desire to play outside India. If there is an opportunity, I will take it.”
"I have to look at my age as well; look for the right club, the right country. But I am happy where I am right now, with City Football Group. I think I have so much to do. We can still achieve so much more than what we have done so far," he signed off.
