Mumbai City FC reclaimed the top spot in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) with a commanding 4-0 win over Kerala Blasters FC at the Mumbai Football Arena on Sunday.

The win also helped them put daylight between them and one of their strongest rivals for the League Shield.

A brace from former Kerala Blasters FC striker Jorge Pereyra Diaz and a goal each from Bipin Singh and Greg Stewart helped Mumbai City FC claim a memorable victory that helped them preserve their unbeaten run this season.

But that wasn’t all, the Islanders’ triumph helped them break a series of records that would make all the sky blue faithful proud of what their team have been up to in the last few months.

Here are the five records that Des Buckingham’s men broke during their win against Kerala Blasters FC:

The longest winning streak in Hero ISL history

Mumbai City FC had equalled Jamshedpur FC’s seven-match winning streak with a triumph against Odisha FC last week and needed all three points to grab the record.

With the 4-0 win, Mumbai City FC have now won eight matches in a row, an achievement matched by no other team in the league’s history.

The longest unbeaten run in club’s history

The Islanders are yet to lose a match this season and in the process have set a new club record for the longest unbeaten run.

Mumbai City FC are yet to taste defeat in 13 games which helped them go past their previous best of 12 matches during their triumphant 2020-21 season.

Buckingham’s men are now just two matches away from equalling the all-time record which is jointly held by FC Goa (2020-21) and ATK Mohun Bagan (2021-22). Going by their current form, they are looking good to write more history.

Most goals scored by Mumbai City FC in a single Hero ISL season

The four fabulous goals from the Islanders took their goal tally to 40 this season which is the most the club have ever managed in a single Hero ISL season. They beat their previous best total of 39 goals from the 2020-21 campaign.

Mumbai are now just six goals away from matching the all-time record of 46 goals in the league stage set by FC Goa in the 2019-20 season and eleven shy of the highest goal tally a by a team in a single season which is also held by FC Goa (2019-20). Considering the Islanders have scored three or more goals in eight out of their 13 matches, this record is very much in their reach.

Longest winning streak at home for Mumbai City FC

Mumbai City FC had never won more than three home games on the spin, but Buckingham’s marauding brigade changed that in emphatic style on Sunday as they romped to their fourth home win on the bounce.

They have won five out of their seven matches at home this season, only drawing against ATK Mohun Bagan and Jamshedpur FC.

Longest unbeaten streak at home in a single season for Mumbai City FC

Buckingham’s side stretched their unbeaten run at home to seven matches with the 4-0 success against Kerala Blasters. With that triumph, they have now beaten their previous longest unbeaten run at home in a single Hero ISL season of six games.

Mumbai City FC will now look to go the entire season unbeaten and become the first-ever team in Hero ISL history to do so. Their form suggests they can do it, but they still have some big tests to pass, starting from ATK Mohun Bagan in Kolkata next week.
