Mumbai City FC head coach Alexandre Guimaraes had to content himself with one point after a 1-1 draw in their 2016 Hero Indian Super League encounter against Atlético de Kolkata at the Mumbai Football Arena on Tuesday.

The hosts dictated terms early on and went ahead in the 27th minute through a brilliant strike from Matias Defederico. However, a red card to Mumbai defender Pronay Halder 18 minutes from full-time gave ATK a new lease of life. The visitors took advantage of the situation as ten minutes later they equalled through Javi Lara to remain unbeaten (two wins and one draw) in the league.

“We played again a good game, we had our chances in the first half and then the second half changed completely after the red card, so we had to change our defensive game. Then after this situation Atlético played well and got their reward, they made us move much more and at the end I think it is a fair result,” Guimaraes told reporters in the post-match press conference.

When asked if he managed to have a word with Halder after the incident, the Costa Rican gaffer said: “No, we have played this game and I know this is not the moment but of course tomorrow we will talk and that happens, and it also shows us how to defend with ten players.”

Mumbai went into the match without their marquee player Diego Forlan on account of injury. Guimaraes admitted they missed the legendary Uruguayan but praised his replacement Boithang Haokip. “With Forlan we won two games! I mean Boithang played a fantastic game today and the team understood what kind of game we have to play without Diego, and Boithang moved very well during his time in the first 45 minutes,” he said.

Commenting on Forlan’s injury, Guimaraes said: “We will have to wait and see, whether or not he travels with us tomorrow morning because there is a continuation of games and now only the doctor can tell when he is able to play.”

Mumbai now travel to Kochi to play Kerala Blasters FC on October 14.
