With three consecutive wins in Hero Indian Super League Season 2, Delhi Dynamos are on cloud nine and now they face hosts Mumbai City FC at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday. Addressing the media on Tuesday, assistant coach Raman Vijayan, when asked was he happy with the way his team had played so far, answered in the affirmative.
“Definitely. It feels great playing away games and gaining three points from each game. It is very important in the initial stage of the league. We are focusing and have performed really well. With two more away games, we’ll try getting maximum points from them,” Vijayan said.
Delhi didn’t go for glamourous football in their previous matches and won by margins of 1-0 (Chennaiyin FC), 2-1 (FC Pune City) and 1-0 (Kerala Blasters). When asked if Delhi had the wherewithal to play like Chennaiyin FC, arguably the most attacking team in the league, Vijayan had an interesting insight to offer.
“That’s a different strategy with us. We are a very organised side, be it the defensive or the attacking side. As a team, we stick to small passes and we have developed a new style of playing with [a nice] understanding between foreigners and Indian players. Roberto [Carlos] helped develop the attitudes of players. Winning is the big deal, so far away games, we are really enjoying it,” he said.
Souvik Chakraborty, who has been at the heart of Delhi’s defence, also addressed the media and when asked if the team had any special plans for Mumbai striker Sony Norde, he said, “There is no special plan in place. It will be a united effort on the team’s part. Mumbai City is a good side with a good attacking squad. So we’ll be looking to handle them better.”
Assessing Mumbai City FC, Vijayan said: “I have respect for all ISL teams, and I can speak the same on behalf of Delhi Dynamos as well. Mumbai City has a great attacking squad, and [Nicolas] Anelka as a coach they have the calibre to handle any kind of situation.“
