Aizawl FC moved a step closer to becoming the first-ever I-League champions from the northeast following their 1-0 win over title favourites Mohun Bagan at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl on Saturday. Billed as the title decider with both sides heading into the encounter on equal points, it was Zohmingliana Ralte’s header from a corner in the 83rd minute that gave Aizawl the win.The win means Aizawl have to avoid defeat in the final round against Shillong Lajong to be crowned I-League 2017 champions. Lajong won’t make it easy for their north-eastern rivals though, and will be looking to bring the curtain down on their campaign with a victory after a 1-1 draw with Mumbai FC at the Cooperage Ground in Mumbai on Sunday. Former FC Goa winger Victornio Fernandes opened the scoring in the second minute, however, Yuta Kinowaki’s 90th-minute leveller ensured the sides shared the spoils.The draw meant thet Mumbai moved off the bottom of the table, leapfrogging Minerva Punjab, who went the opposite way. The northern outfit were beaten 3-1 by East Bengal at the Barasat District Sports Stadium on Sunday. Wedson Anselme gave the Red and Gold Brigade a first half lead before strikes from Robin Singh (FC Goa) and Bikash Jairu (Atlético de Kolkata) in the second period gave them a commanding lead. Minerva did manage to score a consolation goal in the dying minutes of the game through Krishna Pandit.Meanwhile, outgoing I-League champions Bengaluru FC dished out a 7-0 hammering against DSK Shivajians at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangaluru on Saturday. Sunil Chhetri (Mumbai City FC) was the star of the show as he scored twice and provided three assists, playing a part in five of Bengaluru’s seven goals. Chhetri opened the scoring in the 20th minute after a beautiful one-two with ex-Delhi Dynamos attacker Semnilen Doungel that set him up to finish with aplomb from about 20 yards out. Alwyn George then doubled the lead with after converting a Chhetri cross.Chhetri then fed the ball to Eugeneson Lyngdoh with space around him in the 25th minute, allowing the FC Pune City midfielder to sort out his feet before unleashing a stinging left-footed effort from more than 25 yards out to make it 3-0. Doungel then got on the scoresheet himself after spearheading a lightning quick counter that ended in him bagging his first goal of the season as the players headed in the half-time interval with the score reading 4-0 in favour of the hosts.They added three more goals in the second half, the first of which came shortly after the hour mark. It was Chhetri once again who did the damage as he demonstrated his exquiste touch to control a difficult ball by George before finishing from outside on an angle to give Bengaluru a 5-0 lead. He then provided his third assist of the night, this time to CK Vineeth (Kerala Blasters FC), who made it 6-0 for Bengaluru in the 78th minute. Vineeth’s Kerala Blasters teammate Sandesh Jhingan headed in Bengaluru’s last goal of the night from a corner after coming on to replace Chhetri late in the game.Elsewhere, Churchill Brothers beat Chennai City 6-1 at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco da Gama, Goa on Saturday. Kyrgyzstan’s Bektur Talgat hit the back of the net four times for the Goan club, while Ansumana Kromah and former Mumbai City winger Brandon Fernandes scored once each. Michael Soosaira scored the southern outfit’s only goal in the 54th minute.Heading into the final round of matches this coming weekend, Aizawl FC are on the verge of history with their title aspirations now in their own hands. They have 36 points from 17 games, three ahead of Mohun Bagan who have 33 points in second spot. The relegation scrap will also be decided in the final week of the league with Mumbai FC now in ninth spot with 13 points, one point and spot ahead of Minerva Punjab.
