Chennaiyin FC suffered their second successive defeat in Hero Indian Super League 2015 on Thursday when they lost to Delhi Dynamos FC 1-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi, thanks to a Chicao penalty in the eighth minute.
Speaking to the media in the post-match press conference, Chennaiyin FC assistant coach Vivek Nagul rued missed chances. “Delhi played really well in the first ten minutes. By the time we settled down, they were already ahead. It’s always tough to get back after giving the lead so early,” he said.
“Marco [Materazzi] gave a pep talk at the break. We were very good in the second half. Had we not missed easy chances, we would have won the game,” he added.
When asked about Fikru Teffera’s late introduction into the game, Nagul cited fitness issues. “Yes, we did not want to compromise Fikru’s fitness levels. But we also thought Steven Mendoza [who started the game today] would be more effective with his speed,” he said.
Chennaiyin FC also substituted Elano with Bruno Pelissari in the second half after the Brazilian had contributed heavily to the game. Nagul explained as to what led to the decision. “We wanted some fresh legs out there. We thought Bruno could change the game and he was really good. What we planned worked, but we didn’t get a goal,” he said.
