The first encounter of Super Sunday will witness a battle between the west and the south as Mumbai City FC welcome Kerala Blasters FC at the Mumbai Football Arena. The Islanders are on a good run of form having remain undefeated in their last three encounters and a win will take them to the top four of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18 table. Both Thiago Santos and Gerson Vieira have been exceptional for Mumbai this season and before the match, indiansuperleague.com caught up with the Brazilian duo for an exclusive interview. Here are the excerpts.
Thiago, tell us something about your transition into Mumbai’s squad?
It’s very easy to play with these players and they’re very good. We have a high level of players and in each match, I feel more comfortable. We’re all improving together.
Gerson, which Indian player has impressed you the most?
I feel there are a lot of Indian players that have impressed me actually, and if I have to name one it will be Sunil Chhetri. I know him and we have played a lot together. But I like how he plays, he is a very good player and I think he impresses not just me but everyone.
Thiago, any advice from the head coach that has helped you?
The coach gave me a lot of good advice and also allowed me to play freely and do whatever I want to do to create an attack. He hopes that I continue doing a good job.
Gerson, name a Kerala player whom you feel is a threat to the defence?
I think, Iain Hume. I know him since last season and I know he’s a very good player and he scored a hat-trick. For me, he is a big threat and I have to know how to handle him and tackle him.
Thiago, does Mumbai have any specific plans for Kerala’s defence?
Not anything specific. I will do as I always do and try to do my best. I will find a way to try and get through the defence.
Gerson, any change in philosophy for the second half of the season?
I don’t think we need a big change, but we have to improve and always try to get better. That’s the mindset for Mumbai City FC. I think the most important thing is the clarity to listen, try to do as our coach commands and do our best in the match.
