Delhi Dynamos FC take on in-form Chennaiyin FC in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. Pacey winger Romeo Fernandes loves getting forward to make his presence felt in attack, and will need to be more productive in the final third if the Lions are to get their season back on track. In an exclusive interview with indiansuperleague.com, Fernandes shared his thoughts on the season so far and the upcoming fixture. Here are the excerpts.
After the first match your team hasn’t been able to perform, what has gone wrong?
Everyone was excited to play the first match. Everyone was ready to play. They gave their 100% and we won the match. After that, the thinking of the players was different, the mentality was different.
Football is a game of moments – so is it fair to say that failing to capitalize on your moments has hurt your team?
We are missing opportunities. There are chances, but the football is not going into the net. We have trained to score goals. For me, I like to score goals in training but in the match the ball is not going in the back of the net. We have to concentrate on scoring goals.
All Delhi Dynamos’ goals have come in the second half so far, so how important is it to score early in the game?
According to me, we’re playing good. From the start, we are missing chances. We have to convert the chances first half or second half. We have to make sure that we score.
Delhi has a good record against Chennai, can that be considered an advantage?
Of course. Last match we play good but we miss so many chances. Mumbai had five or six chances and they scored four goals. So tomorrow is a big match. We need a good result. We have to win this match.
What is the biggest advantage of playing with foreign players and well established coaches?
I played with so many foreign players in the past three seasons. Different foreigners and different experiences and the coach also. Last year, I played under two different coaches. So different mentality, different coaching, different staff, different training style. I have learnt so many things from the coach and I’m still learning.
