Mendy: Now we need to win against Delhi Dynamos FC

Chennaiyin FC left the bottom of the 2015 Hero Indian Super League table with a thumping 4-1 win against Kerala Blasters FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Saturday evening. Stiven Mendoza scored a hat-trick, his second of the season, and one goal came from Dhanachandra Singh. Chennaiyin captain Bernard Mendy, who led the team from the front, spoke to indiansuperleague.com and reviewed the win that put them back into the semis reckoning. Here are the excerpts from the interview.

How important was it to break the three-match losing streak and win tonight?

It was very important. Because had we lost today, we wouldn’t have had the chance to go the semi-finals. We played well today, but I’m slightly disappointed about having conceded one goal.

You could have scored more goals today. Your thoughts on that?

Of course, we could have scored more as we created a lot more opportunities in this match.

Chennai played all-out attacking football. What do you have to say about that?

We discussed before the game about its importance. So we had to play an attacking game.

"A defender always likes to have a clean sheet."

As a skipper, you’ve won both your games this season. Are you happy with that?

I’m happy about the win but not about the goal conceded. A defender always likes to have a clean sheet.

How confident are you now about your chances for the semi-finals?

We now need to win our next game which is against Delhi. We need to recover and be ready for that important game and see what happens.
