Match week two kick starts at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium in Pune on Wednesday, where hosts FC Pune City take on Delhi Dynamos FC. The visitors have signed a rich crop of players including experienced Spaniard, Eduardo Moya. Having plied his trade in the La Liga for some top Spanish clubs, he joins Delhi to add more depth to their midfield. Moya sat down with indiansuperleague.com for an exclusive interview recently and gave us an insight into his mindset ahead of his Hero ISL bow. Here are the excerpts.
This is your first time in India. How are you feeling and how has the experience been so far?
I’m very happy. This is my first time in India but I’m very excited to have the opportunity to play in the ISL. This is a big stage and I [want to] say thank you to the club Delhi Dynamos, to the technical staff and coach Miguel Portugal. It’s because of them that I’m here in India.
This is Hero ISL’s fourth edition but your first. Have you followed the previous seasons or watched any of the matches?
Yes, I watched the matches. Not too much [though]. Before I could come here, several Spanish players were playing here in different teams in the ISL. They told me about this league and I remember, I tried to come here some time back, but it wasn’t possible then. But now I’m really happy to stay here.
You’ve played in defence as well as midfield in the past. What position do you feel like playing in this season?
My normal position is in midfield, but I have to allow myself to experiment in another position because when I started playing in Spain, I was a defender at a high level. Right back, left back, central defender - I can play in different positions. Coach Miguel Portugal knows this about me. Finally, the most important thing is to be competitive on the pitch. If you are very competitive, sometimes you can play in different positions.
The past two seasons witnessed Delhi reach the semi-finals both times. What are your expectations this season?
The mentality of the team is to, of course, try and win the league. We’re training every day for that, but we know it’s not easy because in this league there are other good teams [as well]. But the good thing is the competitive nature of the league, and the only thing for this team is to win the league.
