The penultimate match-week of Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18’s league phase came to a conclusion on Sunday, and it turned out to be another week full of action, drama, thrills and spills. A total of 20 goals were scored, including seven in one particular fixture. And while the remaining three playoff spots are still there for the taking, the top-position was cemented by the league’s best team so far.

Here’s a lowdown on how the matches fared and the factors which made the week entertaining.

Match 78: FC Goa 1 – 1 Delhi Dynamos FC (Match Report)

Match 79: Mumbai City FC 3 – 2 NorthEast United FC (Match Report)

Match 80: Kerala Blasters FC 0 – 0 Chennaiyin FC (Match Report)

Match 81: Delhi Dynamos 4 – 3 ATK (Match Report)

Match 82: FC Pune City 0 – 4 FC Goa (Match Report)

Match 83: Jamshedpur FC 0 – 2 Bengaluru FC (Match Report)

Goa, Mumbai stay in the hunt: FC Goa played twice this week and while they drew against Delhi Dynamos FC in their first fixture, the second saw them pump four goals past a formidable Pune side. It means that the Gaurs have their fate in their own hands regarding playoff qualification. Mumbai City FC left it late to ensure that they lived to fight another day. With the score-line reading 2 – 2 after 90 minutes in their match against NorthEast United FC, it looked like another team was going to bid adieu to their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs. Lucian Goian however had other ideas as he struck late to keep the Islanders’ hopes alive.

Southern derby has thrills, but no goals: The second southern derby of this season between Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters FC had chances aplenty, a penalty miss, and shots on the woodwork. All it lacked was a goal. The result does no harm to Chennaiyin, but for Kerala things got tougher as they have to now depend heavily on results in and around them to ensure their playoff berth.

Highest scoring match of the season ends in favour of Lions: Seven goals were scored in a topsy-turvy encounter between two teams who are out of contention for a playoff spot. Delhi Dynamos FC scored the opener, but ATK replied with three goals to take a 3 – 1 advantage. Hosts Delhi then scored three of their own to edge ATK and leapfrog them in the table.

Bengaluru FC seal first place as Chhetri makes new record: The Blues had sealed qualification long back, and now they sealed their spot as the top team in the league after beating fellow league debutants Jamshedpur FC 2 – 0. Once more Miku and Sunil Chhetri contributed to the goals, and Chhetri’s strike means that he is the first Indian to score 10 goals in a single Hero ISL season.
