Once FC Goa hit top form, coming to the party in style at the start of the second half of these league phase, they were one of the most cohesive teams in the tournament. Having been rock bottom at the end of 7 games, Zico’s men turned it around in emphatic fashion as they went on a terrific unbeaten run for the remainder of the league stage. One of the architects of Goa’s fantastic team-play was local lad Romeo Fernandes. The wily winger worked his socks off on the right side of the field and was a constant bother to the opposition defenders. When the team got a run of three consecutive home games against FC Pune City, Kerala Blasters FC and NorthEast United FC, the winger really came into his own and stamped his authority on the league.
The league had already seen 99 great goals when Goa took on NorthEast. In the 33rd minute, the diminutive winger got on to the end of a precise through ball from Miroslav Slepička and smashed the ball past the rival keeper to bring up a ton of goals for the league. The Goan’s name will forever be etched into the history books of the league as the scorer of the ISL’s 100th goal.
