Delhi Dynamos FC confirmed the appointment of Miguel Angel Portugal as their new head coach for the fourth edition of the Hero Indian Super League on Thursday. The 61-year-old from Quintanilla de las Viñas, Spain, won the La Liga and Copa del Rey titles with European heavyweights Real Madrid as a player before returning to the Los Blancos and taking his first steps in management with their C and B-sides."I am delighted to be the new manager of Delhi Dynamos FC. I believe that India has a lot of potential in football and I want to do my best to help football grow in Northern India. This will be an amazing challenge for me and I’m sure I will excel," Portugal commented following his appointment.Portugal will take over the reigns at Delhi from the legendary Italian defender Gianluca Zambrotta under whom the Lions enjoyed a highly successful Hero ISL 2016, which they ended as the league’s highest scoring team. His vast experience in the managerial hot-seat has seen him manage the likes of Cordoba FC, Racing Santander and Real Valladolid in Spain. He also served as Real Madrid’s technical director and came close to landing the top job at the Santiago Bernabéu in 2008 eventually losing out to fellow Spaniard Juande Ramos. Renowned for his astute tactics and immense football knowledge, Portugal has even authored a book on football training called Futbol - Medios de Entrenamiento Con Balon (Soccer - Training Media With Balon)."I’m ecstatic to have coach Portugal leading our club this year. Coach Portugal is an incredibly smart manager who has ‘literally’ written a book on how to coach a team successfully. Coach Portugal has also managed in different countries, which shows his ability to adapt to any situation. I look forward to his reign at Delhi," said Delhi Dynamos FC’s director Rohan Sharma.Portugal’s last job was with Algeria’s oldest football club Club Sportif Constantinois in 2016. His other managerial roles beyond Spanish shores has seen him serve as the head coach of Clube Atlético Paranaense in Brazil and Club Bolívar in Bolivia. The 61-year-old tasted success in Bolivia by leading Bolivar to the national top-flight title in the 2012-13 season and he will be looking to do the same with Delhi by guiding them to the coveted Hero ISL trophy in the upcoming season.
