East Bengal FC forward Cleiton Silva has welcomed the appointment of Carles Cuadrat as the team’s new head coach to replace the outgoing Stephen Constantine. 

Cuadrat was named the head coach of the Kolkata giants on Wednesday and comes in with the experience of winning the Hero ISL with Bengaluru FC in 2018-19. 

Silva who was brought to Bengaluru FC by the Spaniard went onto score 16 times for the Blues before securing a move to Kolkata to play for East Bengal FC ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. 

The Brazilian enjoyed a successful first season with the Red and Golds scoring 14 times in all competitions. He believes Cuadrat’s knowledge of Indian football will hugely benefit the team. 

“East Bengal FC will benefit immensely from Coach Cuadrat’s experience. He has been very successful in India and has a lot of experience about how football is played here,” Silva told Khel Now in an interview. 

Cuadrat has since worked in Europe as an assistant head coach with Aris Limassol in Cyprus and Midtjylland in Denmark and will return to India to have a second crack at the Hero ISL trophy. 

East Bengal FC have struggled in the Indian top flight since their entry in 2020-21 but with Cuadrat, Silva believes they will be a stronger outfit. 

“He’s the best candidate for the role. He also has a good relationship with the Indian players. He knows how to develop young players,” the Brazilian said. 

The Red and Golds achieved their best finish in the Hero ISL last season finishing ninth with a record six wins in a single season. But with a winner like Cuadrat in their ranks, the East Bengal FC faithful would expect a stronger challenge for the top spots.
